I have to replace my carpet. Is there any good stores in the Naperville/Aurora area that you could recommend to me?
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew any affordable painters to paint my townhome. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thank You, Jennifer

Pretty much all the carpets are made by only a couple of manufacturers. I would watch for sales. The last stuff we got was thru Home Depot at a good price. I've used Empire before and was satisfied too.

Which was more reasonable? Empire or Home Depot?

Try Geogia carpets. Its a bit of a drive up Ogden but they have great prices. We shopped around. If you ask for the best for the money they will show you a 60 lb. carpet with a very low price with a few of the most popular colors. I spilled a sizable amount of deep blue paint on mine and it all came out.

We've used Georgia Carpets, and they were great. The owners are very friendly and helpful.

I used Olson Rug to puchase about $9K of carpeting about 3 years ago.
Based on my experience, I would NOT recommend them.

For carpeting, we used Bailey's Carpet One on Ogden a couple of years ago and were happy. I don't remember whether it was a sale or not, but their pricing was good and we were happy with the install.
For painting, we used J&J Painting (on the outside of our home) and were happy. They may do indoors as well. Very professional.
You may also want to check out Angie's list. I think that's where we got the number for J&J.

Shaw is one of the biggest makers of carpeting and sells under a bunch of different brand names, e.g. Mohawk, Shaw, etc. I can't remember them all. There was a lot of consolidation in the One of the important things to ask is whether it's polyester or nylon fibers and the kind/quality of underpadding you use. A dense not very deep kind keeps your carpets from wearing as quickly.
We had gone to FCA and purchased Karastan. The quality of the carpeting was very good and lasted very well for many years. We had that house for only about 5 years and it lasted through all that time and two kids very well.
As for FCA, I'm sure they are fine now, but we had a loon of a salesman that almost screwed up everything. That same loon is at the Tile Store near Michaels foods (in the Walmart and Sams stripmall), selling flooring again.
Jenrik - Ever thought about installing your own wood flooring? It's not too hard and it's an invenstment that you should see a larger amount returned to you when you go to sell your place. I've installed about 600-700 sf in my own house, helped with about 800 at a friends home and another 800 at my parents. I have another 1700 sf to do in our house now. If you are interested and have any questions, let me know.
I'm waiting on the painter information as well. We've got a relatively large amount that we are needing done.

I can second the wood flooring recommendation, wish I had done that in hindsight.

I think we are going to put pergo floor in our kitchen. Would we get more money if the entire house was pergo? We are getting ready to sell and we want the most for it as possible. We also checked out Lowes carpet and installation..(does anyone know about lowes and their reputation?) . We also went to Menards but they don't sell pergo and they never seem to have knowledgeable people around to help us.

Pergo flooring, from what we were told is easy to install so we might be able to do that

We bought carpeting from Lowes and Home Depot. At the time, Home Depot on 59 had a long waiting list for installation, so we went to the one in Oswego. It was in November, I think everyone was having families over for Thanksgiving and getting their homes ready. Home Depot and Lowes did a good job with installation and ordering.

Pergo flooring, from what we were told is easy to install so we might be able to do that My parents installed a similar type flooring (see below) of wood and they ar ein their 70s. I laoned them tools and guided them, but they did all the manual labor. I nailed in the baseboard and trim. You should ask a realtor, if you know one, to be sure. Although I think you do get extra for Pergo, I am not sure to what extent and whether whole house coverage will net you more or the same as the cost of the materials. Particularly in light of the cost of installed carpeting. You can also get click together engineered wood flooring. It is basically the same as Pergo, but the laminate layer is hardwood. It looks very good. Again, I just do not know if it is worth doing it for an anticipated sale. You'd definitely want to run the numbers and get a realtor's opinion. Also, look at online pricing. I'm buying 1100 sf of maple flooring online at $5.60/sf + $150 shipping instead of the $7.87/sf + tax for the same brand at the tile store I mentioned earlier. Plus, I save $4.00/sf on installation by doing it myself. Almost $7,000 is a lot of money to save. Pergo install is slightly less at about $2.50-$3.00/sf installation cost. It is easy enough to do yourself in my opinion. It is a bit of work but very doable.
