Did anyone see Oprah today? She is doing a segment (via Rev. Jesse Jackson) on the kids who switched for the day from Harper High School in the city and from Neuqua.

That segment was supposed to air in February. I am not an Oprah watcher and was waiting for word on when it was going to be on. I did not get word. I hope someone I know taped it.

I think Oprah is on twice a day - it should air again tonight at 11:06 if you want to get your VCR or TIVO set up to tape it.

I've got it on Tivo if you want to come over to watch it while drinking boxed wine.
I believe Oprah turned it into a segment of mostly hype, no substance. That segment alone did nothing but demonstrate the inequity between schools. I may have seen it out of context, since I missed the rest of the show.
Right after the segment aired, a mother from Harper gave a reaction that was off track, and Oprah had to cut her off. It seemed like she was trying to say that it was sickening and her school should somehow take away from schools like Neuqua to balance things out. Oprah quickly changed the subject.
The kids were good and gave interesting feedback and honest reactions.
I need to re-watch the rest of the show to see if they had any solutions, other than a redistribution of wealth strategy and entitlement programs.
I am shocked when people pick on Neuqua because they are successful, instead of trying to emulate some of the excellent programs and methods used.

I think the reason they went to NV instead of New Trier or Naperville Central or Naperville North is because NV is successful and has a nice new facility. I think JJ and Oprah's agenda is furthered by showing a nice high school with good test scores, rather than showing an aging facility with good test scores. Central and North are extremely unimpressive facilities, IMO, and don't fit their agenda. (agenda being robin hood school funding reform, imo, and agenda is furthered by showing that more money or nicer facility = higher test scores)
eta - I remember reading or hearing that JJ wanted to go to NV again but the board made him go to WV - can anyone confirm?

Olympic sized swimming pool? HA! I thought that was humorous... I believe it is a short course pool. Maybe the cameras made it look like it was Olympic-sized...you know, like the cameras add 10 pounds to people?

Why did she have to come out here. Northside Prep amd Walter Payton are in the same district as Harper and they look drastically different than Harper.

I realize she gives quite a bit back to the world in terms of money, but we don't see here doing a contrast and compare to her lifestyle and those of people who live in the inner city. Why they had to pick on Naperville, again, is beyond me.

Their test scores are also drastically better than both NV and WV, so why not focus on academics and use those schools in a compare and contrast? But then Oprah would have to drop her 'uban' vs. 'suburban' labels. (I noticed throughout the report, they didn't use the school names, just 'the urban school' and 'the suburban school.') Maybe it's because the magnet school concept helps the best and brightest but hurts those left behind? I don't know.

I was totally disappointed with Oprah's shows....there are real problems and they need to be addressed. If you go to the Gates Foundation website, this "have/have nots" angle is not there.
I think Oprah was led down the JJ wrong way road....what does the pool have to do with drop out rates??? Good golly!

I think Oprah was led down the JJ wrong way road....what does the pool have to do with drop out rates??? Good golly! Another thought that occured to me. Obviously, the Chicago Public School district knows how to run academically excellent high schools. They run several of the highest scoring high schools in the state of Illinois. Why not put the heat on the administration there, and ask them - why? Why do a select few CPS students get a shot at an excellent education and the rest are left behind? What is working at Northside Prep that is NOT working at Harper? Attendance rates? Parental involvement? Teacher qualifications? Do the magnet schools get more money? Do they have better fundraising? Or is it something else that they could identify and model in all of their schools?
