Here is a link to the MVHS budget dashboard from the Administration, as of 2/1/09. Added in, because it was not reflected, is the cost of the land. This shows what's spent so far and what's still left to be spent. Naturally, if anyone has anything more recent, please post it up. winsome.cnchost.com/204/MVHS_CurrentBudget.jpg

What I don't understand is that this is almost 20 million more than what the voters approved. How can they do that? Where is this extra money coming from?

They are turning conveniently the blind one when they deem necessary!

What people need to wake up and realize is we can't afford 3 high schools! An operating referendum is going to be needed and as we know, there's not a chance in hell of that passing.
We need to stop and reassess everything. We can't just keep throwing money away and continuing down our crazy path.
Let's see - all of our 401Ks are crap, our stocks are now worth nothing, we have everyone losing jobs or taking huge cuts (no bonus, etc.), home values have tanked. tuition for college is skyrocketting, we have a new governor that wants to double personal income taxes. Where's the money coming from?

I am so tired of the taxpayers continually being forced to pay for the HUGE mistakes of others!

I don't know - my money tree has taken so many lightening strikes the last 2 years it went up in flames long ago -- 204 needs to live within our means as my family has had to relearn how to do...

Let's call a spade a spade. The Board and admin manipulated the data/student projections (and threatened split shifts, etc.) to secure approval to build a 3d high school we 1) do not need and 2) can not afford. We may have gotten away with this, except the growth that they assumed would fund this spending is not there. As I understand it, in that the CPI went down in December, the District can not raise the tax rate next cycle. In addition, the next assesment cycle will start to capture the housing price declines.
I have run rough numbers and my quick math is showing annual deficits in the 30 million a year plus range starting in 2010. We got a real problem and come 2011, absent an operating referendum passing, we are going to be looking at no possible way of funding the district's obligations.

Sashimi I agree with you. Too bad more folks couldn't see through the mis-information before they voted.
I think the reality is that the SB knows of the budget problem. They admitted it even before the building ref passed.
If there is no money -- and I think we will be critically short of money -- what's the better position to be in when asking for the referendum: An empty high school that just doesn't get opened, or a spanking new school with sophomores and juniors that would have to be sent back to NV or WVHS unless we pass an operating ref? IMO that is a factor in the rush to complete. While I have a low opinion of the SB's business judgement, I have a great respect (fear?) for their ability to get what they want from taxpayers.
204 has a highly successful record of selling referenda -- they'll sell the next one, just like they've sold the rest.....a few of us will remember the lies of the past and the waste, but most of my neighbors still drink the kool-aid.

Enough of the neighbors won't be able to afford the koolaid and they already know it.

The critical factor they mis calculated on however is that the overall economy would tank -- except for that they likely get away with this -- however now - I and many others don't care what the referendum is for - it ain't gonna go thru -- so pouring money hand over fist into expedite costs will not pay off with a passed ops ref.

I think everyone in the district understands.. another referendum = higher taxes. Go around your neighborhood and ask how many people want higher taxes or not. That will be your vote come referendum time. Most people are not going to care if the sky will fall or not. It didn't last time (we were supposed to have split shifts this year if the school wasn't opened for fall 2008).

Where's the money coming from? Agreed. There is NO WAY an operating referendum will pass. The district MUST live within its means just like many of us are having to do right now; live on less. I believe teachers are the most valuable asset we have, however, when everyone else is taking pay cuts and scaling back, why would we grant our teachers an increase ? I don't understand that logic. Money apparently grows on trees here....WROnG!

Never say never. Like I have said before, they already have the PR firm working on how to sell the referendum to the voters. (This is just my opinion)
Most people have no clue what is going on in our district. Why do you think the voter turn out is so low? I have often said, if you are not informed, please don't vote. Unfortunately, people who are not informed will vote because their neighbor tells them to vote that way - "the popular way" irregardless of what it may do to their tax bill.
Soon you will have all the PTA's throwing there support (and $$ which you have given them to become a PTA member) to push through the referendum. They will have the meetings and the people will stand with their signs that it must pass. I have been down this road more times then I care to think about.
