Public school teachers have a responsibility to teach the curriculum and not seek to indoctrinate their students in their beliefs - whatever they may be.
The school district and school board have a responsibility to ensure this.

I think some come up a wee bit short in the 'lead by example' category...while some others simply look the other way or sit silently and allow it to happen.

Yep - which is why I would have grave concerns if my child had this teacher. I have lost confidence in the district's ability to do what is right. Metzger's reply is completely out of line.

In many instances, teachers are held to a higher standard - and should be - as public employees and role models. While this teacher is certainly entitled to his opinions, I'm not sure he is particularly blessed in the common sense department. In terms of MM's response, while he is no longer SB president he is still the senior member and has substantial influence. And over the years he has frequently acted as if he were the attorney for the SB and the SD. The previous posters are right - he doesnt' get it and never will - but I suspect he will be easily reelected in 3 years.

While this is an unfortunate incident to be played out in the media, it is also a very good opportunity to sit down and have a discussion with middle school and high school kids about sexuality, religion, and human nature. After having experienced some pretty horrendous math teachers at NV, my feeling would be if he could teach my child math and make my child understand math, I would be happy. I could care less about his religious preference or sexuality.

I could care less about his religious preference or sexuality. That was my point - that his "discussions" should be limited to the curriculum (math) and that the administration and SB should see to it that they are. Ditto for all the other teachers regardless of their views - they are they to teach their subjects, not indoctrinate.

The sad part is, is that we as parents are being forced to have these conversations with our children earlier and earlier. Better to hear this information from us so that we can have good discussions with our children.
He teaches math. As long as it stays on that subject and he does not interject his personal viewpoints, there is nothing that can be done. It does not mean he is a bad math teacher.
