See now, that would break the cardinal rule I wish existed of not sending an area to the farthest school (sending the eastern part of Owen or even watts or owlish) to MV. It's really not an unreasonable criteria to overlay on top of the whole process. I mean, come on.. we have 3 destinations. Each area would then have in play 2 choices like it did before with the exceptions of those immediate areas butt up against their school that they literally walk to. Yes we have schools closer to us. There are almost twenty 204 elementary schools closer to my home than Owen but life goes on. A more pertinent fact is that BR is one of the farthest subdivisions from MV.

I don't think it's right if they are assigned there either and frankly, I don't believe they have to be if someone were to sharpen their pencils enough. What remains to be seen if the pencil sharpener is plugged in or not and if not, did someone instead grab the sharpie?

Cute one, Arch. I would hope that the SB looks at their own criteria and sees "No split ES's." Then we have the problem solved. I would hope no one from Owen goes north because of the exact argument you make about kids all over the place. You would be going to ES's and HS's that were not first or second choices. Now if Owen west were reassigned to a closer ES, then rules might change but I don't know where they would fit and the boundary line would get ugly.

Personally, I would put O-west to WV and O-East to NV... neither to MV (the farthest school). ...but that's just my opinion because I don't see disjointed areas of land that may go to the same ES due to bussing to be really 'cohesive' neighborhoods anyway. Sorry, but Watts kids in the immediate neighborhood don't just walk over to Lehigh station behind Meijer to see if little Tommy can come out and play or visa versa. It just doesn't happen. If the parents are driving their kids together across those distances for those things then that friendship is going to outlast any different school assignment that may exist multiple years after the fact anyway. Like I said, that's my practical outlook on it based on actually being in this situation w/ my oldest who still gets together (due to the parents making it happen) with someone who he has not gone to school with for the past 6 years due to them moving from Hill to a D203 school.

I've thought about Owen east going to NV too. That smaller amount of kids would fill the Old Wheatland gap left behind when they moved to Petersen. And if you have to split an elementary school, that is definitely the one to split from a non-contguous standpoint. But the criteria says no split ES's so we'll see if they stick to their criteria.

I recall that Dr. D. mentioned no split ESs and several other criteria in the recent past but according to the D204 web site, this is the criteria being used for boundaries:
In determining new boundaries, the board has directed the administration to develop a plan that:
1. Balances enrollment with attention to school capacities providing room for growth.
2. Maximizes academic strength of our three high schools and seven middle schools.
3. Minimizes the following: ~Transportation time and costs ~Non-contiguous boundaries ~Splits that any one student would experience

Bingo, GM.. they do not say NO SPLIT anything... only to 'minimize' it.
I see the Owen, Cowl, Watts drastic geographic Split that already exists today being in that 'minimal' category and needing each area to be looked at independently to determine which is the 'farthest school' from each respective area and cross it off the list. Honestly, it makes more sense to send the Cowl/Watts satellites to MV because it is not the farthest school from those locations behind Meijer. MV is, however, the farthest from the Cowl/Watts main school areas and definitely the farthest from Owen-East. And again, if the numbers worked, I would put O-West to WV.

Keep in mind that the district is planning to re-do boundaries K-12. This means that elementary, middle and high school boundaries will be affected.
I believe that Owen will split: Brighton Ridge and West Glen stay at Owen. Villages of Meadow Lakes and Chicory Place will stay west of 59. Possibly Chicory to White Eagle and Villages back to McCarty. This split would move over 300 students out of Owen, which will probably create a shift for students attending Springbrook, Clow, Welch and Builta.
I think the middle schools will see shifts in their population as well, mainly because of the WVHS gold campus converting back to a middle school in 09. Scullen, Gregory and Still in particular.
When looking at capacity numbers that the district has put out, there are a few elementary schools that are well under capacity. In order are: Peterson (-406), Watts (-319), Owen (-288), Springbrook (-267), Cowlishaw (-247) and White Eagle (-244). Because of these numbers and available seats, I think there will be shifting all around the district starting with elementary.
District-wide boundary changes rarely (if ever) happen in this district. I think a large portion of the district will see changes of some sort. Some will be more radical than others, but we will all feel it.

Dr. D did say they were going to clean up some of the elementary school boundaries. The middle of the map is a mess. The color coded elementary school boundary map looks like a stained glass mosaic, instead of clear blocks of color to indicate attendance areas. Owen is represented as being south of Bailey Rd. but it is actually north. Are there any other major discrepancies?

Earlier I had pointed out that a whole wing @ Watts is devoted to the Basics programs for non-included, semi included and children who need other supported educational work. With that program there, its 'additional capacity' is really just the 1 empty classroom that gets used throughout the day for intervention work and next year that classroom will be full because the 3rd grade this year is too large and it fill that in when they are in 4th. Toss All Day K into the mix and they are 'full' even though their 'capacity' shows on a piece of paper they have room. They won't.

Don't forget some of that excess at Peterson will be needed when Ashwood is built out...

Yes, we found - the area represented as the far NE part of Watts is actually 203 - they used the wrong EW street to color code -

You now need to fill Owen again. Would you pull Welch north of 87th? I don't think you can pull from Clow or Springbrook because they are walkers I think. But if you combined Welch north and Owen east into Owen and made that all go to NV, then your boundary would be a nice square bordered by 75th St and Rt 59. But what does adding Owen west do to McCarty and White Eagle capacity? What a mess.
