A 10-year-old Crone Middle School student was seriously injured Friday afternoon after running partway across busy Book Road in Naperville and being struck by an Indian Prairie School District 204 bus.
Paramedics took the boy to Edward Hospital in Naperville, but the extent of his injuries led to his being transferred to the University of Chicago Hospitals, Naperville police Sgt. Mike Anders said. The University of Chicago Hospitals have a facility specializing in the treatment of children.
Anders, the police department's traffic unit supervisor, would not identify the boy, citing federal privacy laws.
The youth was injured at 3:32 p.m. near Clearwater Lane and Book Road. The intersection lies on the border between the River Run and Saddle Creek neighborhoods on Naperville's far southwest side.
Anders said a portion of Book Road was closed to traffic for about 90 minutes Friday afternoon while members of the police department's Traffic Section investigated the incident.
"The initial investigation indicates the school bus was proceeding southbound on Book Road from Clearwater Lane when the child ran westbound across Book Road" and into the bus' path, Anders said in a written statement.
Janet Buglio, District 204's director of communication services, said the boy is a sixth-grade student at Crone Middle School. The school, at 4020 W. 111th St., is several blocks south and east of the accident scene.
The district's busing services are provided by Naperville-based Laidlaw Transit Inc. Buglio said the bus driver had just finished taking students home from Gregory Middle School, 2621 Springdale Circle, which is nearly three miles north and east of the crash site.
Buglio said the bus, carrying only its driver, was en route to pick up students at Graham Elementary School, 2315 High Meadow Road, when the accident occurred. Graham lies six blocks south and west of the crash scene.
Anders said the bus driver was not hurt in the collision. No charges had been filed as of Friday night.
Rumor has it that the kid got on the wrong bus and was making his way home. There was some discussion on my block on that 6th graders have a pretty big adjustment to middle school and wondering if sixth graders were up to it. I am just wondering what other people's thoughts were.
