High school of the future:
Members of a Naperville Unit District 203 committee put on their thinking caps and decided against plans to build a brand new Naperville Central High School. Instead, they favor refurbishing the existing structure. While the rehab project will cost more than a few pretty pennies, the idea of building a whole new high school smacks of an attempt to keep up with the Joneses, or in this case, the Potawatomis…
Respectful of American Indians:
… As in the Potawatomis in Indian Prairie Unit District 204. Naperville can hardly be accused of ignoring the historic contributions of American Indians, or being insensitive to their plight. District 204 has established a tradition of naming its schools after Potawatomi chiefs and tribe members — Neuqua and Waubonsie Valley high schools, and the new high school will be named after Potawatomi Chief Metea. And in 1992, the District 203 school board changed Naperville Central’s nickname to Redhawks, agreeing the old moniker, Redskins, was demeaning to American Indians.
