For the fifth year in a row the Waubonsie Valley High School music department and its students have received a national honor.
Waubonsie was one of two schools in the nation to be named a Grammy Signature Gold School by the Grammy Foundation. The recognition also comes with $5,000 for the music department. Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Fla., was the other Grammy Signature Gold School.
"I think the most pleasing part of the recognition is the consistency of our students to create music over many, many years musically," said Matt Temple, fine arts chair at Waubonsie.
Waubonsie submitted a CD that contained five minutes of music from a cross section of the different musical groups in its department from 2006. A list of each piece that each group in the entire department performed also was submitted. Music from the steel and jazz bands along with a choir group also were submitted in a general category.
This is actually the sixth time Waubonsie has received the honor, having been honored the past five years in a row. Temple said the department is humbled by the honor. He stressed recognition should be given not only to Waubonsie Valley teachers, but also to music teachers in all the middle and elementary schools.
"We view this as a culmination of the students' training from elementary through high school," Temple said. "It is nice to be at the high school level where you receive the recognition, but this is more of a reflection of students' ongoing growth through the music program in the school district."
What the department will do with the $5,000 is still up in the air. Temple said in the past they have used the money to commission original pieces of music and to upgrade technology. The official presentation from the Grammy Foundation will be at a concert in May.
The Grammy Foundation program recognizes the top public high schools across the United States that have made an outstanding commitment to music education. In 2005, Neuqua Valley High School received the top honor at the National Grammy Signature School. After receiving the high honor, Neuqua has a period of time before it can submit its work to the Grammy Foundation for consideration.
Three other high schools in Illinois also made the list, with New Trier High School in Winnetka receiving the top honor this year as the National Signature School. St. Charles North High School in St. Charles and William Fremd High School in Palatine were named Grammy Signature Schools and received $1,000 each.

Students and parents were told the night before the Wind Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble students left for Indianapolis for the Bands of America Honor Festival. While in Indianapolis, the band received numerous accolades from top college music professors from around the U.S.
Students represented the SD and community very well and there was a lot of Warrior Pride! Go WVHS!

www.dailyherald.com/search/printstory.asp?id=300076For the fifth year, Waubonsie Valley brings home a Grammy By Sara Hooker Daily Herald Staff Writer Posted Tuesday, April 10, 2007 The Waubonsie Valley High School music department struck gold this year as it was named one of the top three programs in the nation by the Grammy Foundation. The award, designated as Gold status by the foundation, honors the Aurora school for excellence in music instruction. It’s the fifth year in a row Waubonsie has been honored. About 900 students participate in the school’s music department or about one in four students. “A lot of really great things have been coming together for the department as a whole,” said Fine Arts Chairman Matt Temple. This year, 28 students participated in the all-state music festival — the highest number in school history. Additionally, the wind and percussion ensembles played at the National Music Festival at the end of March. The Grammy Foundation created the Signature Schools program in 1998 to recognize the top public high school music departments nationwide. Each of the 22 winners receives a custom award and a monetary grant. Schools apply in the fall by submitting concert recordings and other samples. Three other Illinois high schools — New Trier in Winnetka, St. Charles North and Fremd in Palatine — were recognized this year by the Grammy Foundation with New Trier taking home the foundation’s top honors. Both high schools in District 204, which includes portions of Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbrook and Plainfield, have been recognized repeatedly by the Grammy organization. Neuqua Valley, in Naperville, won the organization’s top honor in 2005. As a stipulation of that, it has not been allowed to apply the past two years. Waubonsie has been named a Signature School for the past five years and has earned six awards total. “The fact that we’ve been recognized consecutively indicates there’s consistency,” Temple said. The music department will receive an award and a $5,000 grant. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- dailyherald.com

I'll let you all help me decide here, but was the NV reference really necessary? I don't think it was.

I'll let you all help me decide here, but was the NV reference really necessary? I don't think it was. Of course it was necessary. We don't want NVHS to feel left out now do we?
