This just caught my eye from the Sun article April 13, 2008 By MIKE MITCHELL mmitchell@scn1.com and another article recently posted:
"In 2005 and 2006, the district attempted several times to buy the church's acreage, but were turned down."
Why would the district attempt to buy the land in 05 and 06? Not just negotiate but buy. IMO a big difference. It appears thats what they were planning to put the 3rd HS here and had a Plan B despite thier denial. It seems that then Howie and company have wanted this property all along and when they couldn't get it, they labeled the site "unsafe". They probably low balled the Church and the Church pushed back. They must have been using the same negotiating team with Brach Brodie. Surprise. I am guessing some of the discussions with the Church went something like this " we will let you use Granger temporarily and if BB doesnt work out, we want that as part of our usage fee".
After paying $35k an acre, lets say they offered them $75k an acre would give them a nice profit. The Church told them to go pound sand since they just paid $225k for the Brach Brodie. Somewhere they may attempted to convince AME that 25 acres on BB was enough property. The Board knew it had to act quickly because the surrounding Brach Brodie land was worth so much more and attempted to set a precedent for the cost of the remaining 55 acres we needed. Which brings me to the following:
" All of you anti Eola people are now racist because you are preventing the one of the oldest Afro American Churches in the state from building their facility / campus because they were "counting on the fund from the sale of the land all along". You are racist because you dont want to go to the Albatross, you are elitist because you don't deserve to live in a your ritzy house with more square footage than I do or with a different zip code. You don't deserve it. You haven't earned it. You are also selfish and it is you who is to blame for all of this. Why don't you understand that. And because you voted yes for BB, we are now in this predicament".

NSFOC's Complaint.
I think everyone is jumping the gun right now. If there is anything I've learned about this situation, it's that noting is set in stone. It's like the weather: wait 15 minutes and it will change. This new news does not excite me. There are too many other variables still floating around. When there is a structure standing, anywhere, then I will relax and take a deep breath.

The longer this HS situation continues........I predict that those so called "small groups" of people will start turning into "larger groups of people!"

Apparently the paper also printed quotes from a nonexistent person. The is no Greg Forest as a Trustee of St. John. Hmmmmm Good job Herald!!!!! I have heard and seen this comment a few times over the last 24 hours. Has it been verified? If so, we really are on a crazy train. 100% VERIFIED AND REQUEST SENT TO EDITOR TO MAKE PUBLIC CORRECTION.

This is complete bull-sh*t. First, I'm not a member or supporter of NSFOC, but the checkbook is out now. The district and SB sold the community on BB. Then they got hold of our money and drastically changed their direction. D*mn straight people are mad - and they're getting madder by the minute thanks to the antics of Chad Martinsen and Jeannette whatever. So they were shopping AME in 2005 and 2006 - wasn't that during the same period they were selling the public on BB and spending our taxdollars to sue BB and telling us not to worry they could afford the land?! Were they shopping AME while they tried to secure quick-take legislation? Something stinks to high heavens now and somehow I don't think GOD is on their side. I used to think the Lisa Madigan angle was a long shot, but the more we learn the more I think we need involvement from a higher authority. I am placing a call to Darlene Rushetti (sp?) first thing tomorrow morning. We desperately need her help. Now even I knew that! But I didn't. I listened to their dog and pony shows where they only talked about BB. When questioned about any Plan B, they told us it wasn't necessary. When questioned what they would do if the price of the land came in higher than they anticipated they acted like we were total nincompoops (couldn't resist) and told us they had added a little extra to cover that possibility. I knew something didn't seem right - which is why I voted No. But I think we're just scratching the surface of what truly went on here. What else could you enlighten us about? Do tell.

Found this on a blog yesterday. It caught my eye because yet again it is mentioned that the Church was approached by the district a few times to sell the land.
I really think it's time for us to be told the real story.
I guess this was not only plan B. It seems it was originally plan A.

Old Chicago-area church is getting a new homeThe City Council of Aurora, Ill., voted unanimously Tuesday night to annex the land needed for the 145-year-old St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church to build a 6,500-square-foot church. Plans for an expanded church began in 2000 when the Rev. Jesse Hawkins recognized the need for a larger space for his growing congregation. The church, which began in Aurora with seven Black men and women in 1862, now has 700 members. The congregation has worshiped at Granger Middle School on Aurora’s west side for the last two years. St. John’s previous building, which seated only 550 people, was sold in 2006. In 2004, the church bought 84 acres on Aurora’s west side, east of Eola Road and south of Diehl Road. The church is selling 49 of those acres to Indian Prairie School District 204 for the district’s third high school but will keep the remaining 35 acres for its church campus. The site of the new school was controversial because the district fought for years to buy land near the site. The school board finally gave up and decided to buy land elsewhere, clearing the way for the latest council action. “This is a great opportunity for the church,” said Mike Roth, the church’s attorney. “It enables the church to meet the demands of the community.” The proposed church campus will contain three buildings, each one built in a separate phase.

I can fathom this scenerio: B&S with a BS condemnation suit against BB all the while never thinking they would actually get it... when they did they acted stunned because anyone who REALLY REALLY wanted it would have jumped on the price and just taken it and moved on and built the school. "OH CRAP, now that we can get it, what do we do?!?!?!?!?!" Uh, BUY IT.. DUH! No.. we came up with EVERY REASON why we CAN NOT BUY IT and even MADE STUFF UP to *PROVE* we could not afford it. give me a break, it works out the CHEAPEST of every other option out there and it still is. Not saying this is true, but it's unfortunately a believable scenerio with what's come out in the laundry thus far.
