Anyone else attended this event at WV on Monday?
My daughter was nominated by her Math teacher to receive recongition at the"Evening with the stars" event at WV. She is in a block style math class were she is taking Algebra 1 pt. 2 and Geometry together with the same teacher. She and others were identified as freshman (she was taking Alg. 1 pt 1 last year) as math students with potential to suceed in this block style class. The class has a B average in the algebra part and high C in the Geometry part. Because of this, WV decided to keep this for next year. She will be placed in Algebra 2 with Trig in her junior year. She will be graduating with 5 years of math.

That's interesting that she will graduate with 5 years of math while my kids who go all the way through Calc BC will only graduate with 3 years of math.

Who would of thought b/c she was as a freshman initially placed in Algebra 1 part 1. She exceled in this class. These kids need to be identified as kids with potential and worked to their abilities. She says alot of kids harass her because they think these kids in this class are stupid. I believe if she has a good foundation in Algebra then the other classes will be less difficult.

Surprisingly, sometimes girls are discouraged from going into math, even in this day and time. My college senior, ( WVHS '03) who is completing her credits to become a teacher, when she told her admissions advisor that she was going to dual major in math and education, was asked, do you really want to major in math ? She took 4 years of math and was PA in ES and accel in MS. Well 4 years later, and a 3.7 GPA, she is one of only 5 female math majors in her school, and the only one going to teach. And we wonder why we are behind other countries in education. I am hoping she will be coming back to 204, but there are other side issues that may have her elsewhere. boyfriend

I don't know why anyone would discourage girls from math or science in this day and age. I was encouraged in both when I was in school (started college in 1985). The only thing I heard a lot being a math major was "What are you going to do with that? Teach?" which wasn't my plan. The small college I attended didn't seem to have more men than women majoring in math but I don't know/remember the numbers so it must not have been a significant difference or a very low number. In junior high and HS my friends and I always wondered about the idea that boys were better in math because in our experience girls were better at most academics. Also, doctorwho, sorry to hear the boyfriend/place to live issue isn't resolved yet. I hope she comes back here!
