It knocked a picture off my wall, but I still slept through it, picture falling above my head, glass breaking and all.

Rural, I slept through it also. ED kept saying that my youngest two children and I could sleep through an earthquake. At first I thought he was kidding then when I asked if there was really an earthquake, he said yes. Still, it's ED and so I thought he was kidding until the news. I also slept thought an earthquake in California while on vacation with my parents. I cannot sleep through a floor squeak, but I guess I can through a quake. ;D

Okay, since nobody else has, I'll be the first. I slept through it, but I read the news reports. I even went online to find other news articles. No reports of exploding gaslines as a result of this earthquake. Hasn't been one like it since 1968. Still not worried. Apparently, the pipelines are built to withstand this type of thing, but please update me if you find anything that refutes this about West Salem, Illinois. I slept through it to. Drove by AME this AM. No crater, all homes still standing, no venting gasses, no derailed trains or downed power lines.

Some of us look at gambling cldhrens lives ( no matter how small the odds)- as serious, you think it's a cartoon. Nice If there was a breach this morning you'd likely have them duct tape it and keep on building. Anything to have Brooks-Brookdale High.

If the next on is 1.2 larger than this one, it's going to be a lot harder to laught it off. I did see some significant structural damage to buildings in Louisville on the news just now -- isolated but not minor, and Louisville not exactly a neighbor. No one is saying it's going to happen, and sure as hell no one wants it to happen, but again the Buildsmart guidelines were written for areason, not becuase people had time on their hands.

Doc,
I don't think I'm being cavalier, at least that was not my intention. However, I am being a realist. The chances of something terrible happening are very, very slim. Impossible? No, but tragedy can strike anywhere, no matter how safe the location.

I am commenting on people's paranoid responses. Had there been a breach, I feel very certain that it would not have been arch's version of armeggedon out there. Safety controls would have engaged, and no or minimal damage. The pipes would have been replaced then with brand new ones. Think what you will

Think what you will Maggie, couldn't resist, but No our SB would NOT make them replace the pipes with new ones, b/c that would probably interfere with MV's opening date....I can see Dash saying, “Full steam ahead, baby"....no stopping for anything (I am being sarcastic)

My better half snores rather loudly, I've learned to sleep through a lot of things. I feel the need to joke just a little today... I thought is was a fleet of earth movers with MM riding on the front titanic style and God riding shot-gun. On the more serious side.. Seriously, it does provide a clear reminder sh$t happens. And I do believe there is a reason for build smart guidelines.

I just heard on the radio that up here in northern Illinois we are only affected by the rolling of the quake as it passes by us. Arch, can you tell us if that differs from the actual event nearby? Yes, I would be concerned if I lived in Missouri or Southern ILlinois, but our area is on the edge of this fault when I googled the map. Has there ever been an earthquake that originated up north here? Again, looking at that map provided by jb in the earthquake teaching link, it is mostly down south, but this is only the last 6 months. I think it would be a good idea to look at the radius of damage from the epicenter of any quake and then determine our chance of being in the epicenter before jumping on the hysteria bandwagon.
