On Tuesday, September 19, the Indian Prairie School District 204 Parent Diversity Advisory Council is sponsoring "Dare to be Different, Success Does Not Come by Accident."

Presented by Dr. Sonya L. Whitaker, this workshop will motivate both students and parents for the new school year.

Dr. Whitaker will discuss strategies for parents and students to maximize academic success. Topics include how parents can get the most out of parent/teacher conferences and helping students focus on goal setting.

Dr. Whitaker is Director of Literacy, Social Studies and Career Education for one of the largest school districts in Illinois. Her experience is in the area of cultural issues and reading achievement of students in public and charter schools.

This event is free and open to the community.

Indian Prairie School District 204's Parent Diversity Advisory Council is looking for parents interested in participating in a series of upcoming Dialogue Circles.

Through facilitated dialogue, a group of diverse people can come together to share their experiences and perspectives about racial and ethnic relations and issues in an environment of mutual respect. The goal of the Dialogue Circles is to discuss issues relevant to Indian Prairie School District, moving toward understanding and allowing solutions to arise.

The Dialogue Circles are open to all parents and educators who are striving to ensure that all students receive the full benefits of our school activities and curriculum. It is critical that the Dialogue Circle be a true reflection of the racial and cultural makeup of the district. Participants must commit to attend three 2-hour meetings. The first meeting is scheduled for January 30.
