I had a kid at Granger last year. The ceremony was nice. Short and sweet. They give department awards, etc. The dance and picnic were totally planned and implemented by the PTA and parent volunteers. Lots of hard workers to pull it off. And yes, I did see a kid show up in a limo Oh, they also did a slide show to music with each kid having their own slide in the presentation. A nice touch. At the end, each kid went home with the slide show and a seperate CD with popular songs from the year that the kids all voted on. Again, done and implemented by parents. God bless them! ;D I was a pizza slice hander-outer..... At least you didn't have some lone parent trying to profit by selling the slideshow for $10 per cd straight into their own pocket like Watts did last year fo the 5th grader farewell (without even getting permission to redistribute from the photo owners).

That was my only real ' complaint' was the lack of all the kids to have one last time together - this was the one thing that upset my daughter - missing a last chance to take picks together with many of her friends on other 'teams' within Hill. Logistically within the confines of the school I understand why I guess - but she was the mroning and many kids then left with their parents before the afternoon walk thru... Come to think of it, they did split into a morning and afternoon session. I see what you mean about not being able to be with all of their friends one last time....

That's the only 'down side' to Hills, if I had to actually claim one... Otherwise, I personally thought it went very well... my daughter just couldn't wait to get the heck out and be done.

Yikes on that one! Yeah, it came out of the 8th grade celebration fund. They had quite a bit of money to work with. AT the beginning of each year parents have the opportunity to donate to this as well as donate to the "for the love of everything that is sacred no more fundraisers! Here's my $25,$50 check instead fund.." ;D

My wife was in downtown Naperville yesterday and overheard a discussion about a wonderful girls birthday party recently, where they all went to get "made up" at Zano salon, followed by lunch at Hugos. They were second graders!!!!! setting ther bar quite high for future 'events' - but again, some people have that kind of cash / lifestyle . I don't but if they do - more power to them I guess. btw = lunch at Hugo's likely less than lunch at Mongolian / Friday's etc. -- one of the best kept secrets in Naperville. Many entree's / sandwhich's under $10 - and can add soup and or salad for $1 each ! Really a bargain. DocW I was going to say the same thing. Hugo's is a steal for lunch. It's same price or cheaper than Noodles & Co. or even Jimmy's and the food is much better.

The Gold Rush was a get together for 8th grades from each of the middle schools (Hill, Still, Granger=WV), (Crone, Scullen, Gregory=NV) and they played games, etc. My daugther who graduated from Still had it. The kids received a t shirt
researching: do you feel Scullen got the shaft due to redistricting?

Scullen didn't even have an 8th grade dance. What a bummer. So this is what we have for Scullen so far: rained out Carnival with no back up plan - a file folder and a golf ball improvised for mini golf and the rest of the kids sat around - got their pizza 9th period no dance no picnic no movie night boring and uninspirational "promotion" Ok, I don't like over the top celebrations for 8th grade graduations, but we celebrate more over a lost tooth or the first time a little one goes on the big potty. Scullen definitely dropped the ball on this one. It's definitely not due to a lack of parental involvement. During the rained out carnival there actually were too many volunteers. What's the deal with this? Were they being punished for something? If so, the parents should have definitely been informed. Just when I think my disappointment in this district can't get any lower... I see why you're disappointed but with all of those parent volunteers why didn't they plan a dance, a picnic and an inside "back up plan" for the rainy day? This was all left to the Granger parents to implement not the teachers, admin etc.. They had a parent committee that met several times during the year. Same with Teacher Appreciation Week, Red Ribbon Week, etc. During registration is when this ball gets rolling and sign ups occur. I'd talk to the PTA president if there isn't a committee already in place.

That was not don 10 years ago - it sounds like something in between then and now- but I like the idea. A lot of these kids know each other from school and club sports / from music groups and clubs / district competitions etc.--

It was awesome! A great chance for them to meet other kids before school starts!

The Gold Rush was a get together for 8th grades from each of the middle schools (Hill, Still, Granger=WV), (Crone, Scullen, Gregory=NV) and they played games, etc. My daugther who graduated from Still had it. The kids received a t shirt researching: do you feel Scullen got the shaft due to redistricting? I honestly don't know. I believe it could be a combination of things. It's most likely a lack of attention on the part of the Scullen staff, PTA, etc. The staff are probably reacting to what they hear and read being said about this area from our own SB / Admin. I am sure they are trying to be professional but with all of the heat our area has taken, it's impossible to be unaffected. That may explain the lack of enthusiasm the kids received from the staff. As for the carnival, I can't blame the volunteers unless they chair the event. Volunteers support what was organized by others. It's my understanding that the volunteers are the one's who came up with the makeshift mini golf involving the file folder. As someone who heavily volunteers myself and has chaired many an event, I do not understand how there wasn't a back up plan for bad weather. The bad weather was predicted for 2 days. Plenty of time to make changes. I know that Crone had a similar event last year and moved it indoors, including the inflatables. Maybe it is all due to a lack of morale over here. Could it be that when Dr. D pitted Welch and Fry against each other it created a major divide between the parents that they can't even work together? I don't know. What I do know is that everything at Scullen changed overnight and that is unacceptable to me. When it goes to this level, I do have to seriously consider a move. I am not willing to have my child be a sacrificial lamb. Moving to a new high school is one thing, having a terrible year-end 8th grade experience is another. What is in the future for these kid's high school experience? How about when they all move to an extremely overcrowded WV as sophomores and the siblings of the kids moved to MV are still attending as upperclassmen. Many of those upperclassmen will have heard the tale of the entitled, elitist, racists coming in. Many of those upperclassmen will be the children of those angry individuals who like to spray paint peoples houses and post hateful things on the Sun Blog. Combine all of that with the frustration of trying to navigate THE MOST overcrowded hallways in the district. Tempers will flare. What kind of environment will I be sending my child into?

I don't think the kids would react like that My kids do not judge like that If anything the kids at Wv hear that they are hated because they are bad I tell them the more friends the merrier. I can't control what other parents say from both sides

I can't control what other parents say from both sides I agree with you on most of what you said. I don't parent that way either. However, you and I also don't spray paint other people's houses or post evil hateful things on web blogs. The problem is what we can't control.

However, you and I also don't spray paint other people's houses or post evil hateful things on web blogs. The problem is what we can't control. Researching, I am so sorry for the concerns that you have. In all honesty, I think there are many things in this world that we cannot control so it really all boils down to how we choose to approach and handle these situations personally. I do not think your children will be viewed as anything other than another Warrior and classmate in the eyes of the other kids. They will all be on the "same" team both literally and figuratively. My kid just found out the other day where one of his buddy's lives when we had to drop him off over by Home Depot. They've been friends since last September. I will have a Junior at WV in 2009 and a younger one at MV. My older one could honestly care less about any of the stuff associated with the third high school. They (the kids)really don't bother themselves with it. Truly. The younger one is sad not to be going to WV but kind of glad not to be at the same school as the older one. Figures. My unsolicited advice (sorry) is to stop talking about the whole thing entirely (at least in regards to the kids) and start attending camps, events, programs at WV so your kid can get familiar with the environment. There are also lots of opportunities for parental involvement and I think this helps sometimes when transitioning. You can go to the WV website and download a multitude of sports camps, etc. Before long they'll be asking for a Warrior sweatshirt ;D As far as the crowding thing, WV actually is set up to handle the hallway crowds better than NV. Essentially, the grades will be sequestered in their own block areas for most classes. The lunchroom also has a much better flow with each grade level eating primarily together. I hope I am giving you some positive feedback here as I do truly believe your son or daughter will not only be happy at WV but will thrive!
