School Lunch Adds Produce of the Month
Reported by 204-info@ipsd.org on 9/2/08
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Indian Prairie District 204 students will have the opportunity to learn a little more about a variety of delicious fruits and vegetables this year as part of a school lunch program called Produce of the Month. Sponsored by Sodexo, your school’s foodservice provider, and a number of produce trade organizations, this fun and educational program is designed to reinforce the many benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, while introducing some new varieties that may be less familiar to both our students and yourself.
During this program, students will be encouraged to include more fruits and vegetables as part of their daily meals, while learning more about the health benefits of eating produce on a regular basis.
Each month throughout the school year, we will display colorful mini posters to highlight an individual fruit or vegetable. In addition, we will have available fun activity sheets focusing on the featured produce, as well as engaging information flyers that will be available online each month to share with you and your family.
To round out the celebration, the selected fruit or vegetable of the month will also be incorporated into school lunch menus or sampling events so our students can experience just how good produce can be. Please make the selection of Produce of the Month at our online menu site to review each school's Produce of the Month celebration date.
This program will benefit both our students and their families. Often times there is conflicting or confusing information regarding the foods we eat. This is one way we can help communicate the benefits of eating a variety of fruits or vegetables and the individual qualities of each produce item. We feel the better informed you are, the better choices you will make in the future regarding your diet. I encourage you to review the first information flyer below and include the featured produce item in your home meals when possible for added reinforcement.
If you have any questions on Produce of the Month or any other dining event, please feel free to contact our office at 630-428-6568.
Sincerely,
Lori McMahon, General Manager, Indian Prairie District 204 Food Service
