AURORA -- Waubonsie Valley's opener of the volleyball season couldn't have gone too much better.
Facing a quality Lincoln-Way Central squad, the Warriors turned a summer of preparation and anticipation into an exciting 25-17, 25-22 victory.
"Lincoln-Way was ranked as a team to watch, so we were pumped to come out hard and make a statement," said Waubonsie Valley coach Kristen Stuart.
Anchored by a superb effort by senior setter Kassie Kadera, Waubonsie always seemed to have an answer when the Knights challenged.
The final challenge by the visitors was snuffed out by athletic front-liners Joslyn Drew, Alana Jones and Nicole Salmon.
"Drew is in track and Jones is in soccer, so they're both amazing athletes," said Stuart. "And Katrina Boryc also had a very good game receiving serves."
Trailing 17-15 in the second game, Drew (seven kills, three blocks) hit off a L-WC block, followed by a similar effort by Salmon that tied the score.
After a Warrior service error gave the Knights the lead, Jones and Salmon (six and five kills respectively) each hit off Knight blocks as part of a decisive 5-0 run. Drew locked up the victory with an emphatic kill.
Waubonsie Valley never trailed in the first game and opened up a cushion with a 6-1 surge for a 19-10 lead. Kadera, who is signed for the University of Toledo's program next year, served five of the points in the run. She finished with 25 assists for the match.
Jones, in addition to spending plenty of time above the net, had several sensational saves which allowed her team to stay in and, eventually, win points.
"It was a great start," said Jones. "Everybody is enthusiastic and ready to go. Our goal is to make state this year." Volleyball: Waubonsie Valley 25-25, Lincoln-Way Central 17-22
