Daniel Betts and Naperville Park District leaders hardly unpacked from the honeymoon before realizing their marriage wasn't meant to be.
Neither side wanted to point fingers Friday, instead saying their nearly four-month relationship just never took hold.
"Nothing happened that was anyone's fault," Betts said Friday morning, hours after he officially resigned his post as executive director and the park board approved his $86,000 severance package. "Things just didn't work out. That's all I can tell you."
Betts signed a three-year contract in late February and began work in March. He had been on a paid leave of absence since mid-July.
Park board President Suzanne Hart said both parties should be commended for realizing early that the relationship "just wasn't the right fit."
"We're all happy we were able to figure this out within the first four months instead of dragging it out over four years," Hart said Friday. "Now it's all over and we can all move on. I sincerely wish Daniel nothing but the best in life and I hope he feels the same toward the district."
Betts would not comment on his feelings about the district but did not hide his feelings for Naperville.
"I love this community and my family does, too, so we hope to stay in the community for a long time," he said. "My two children start school in (Indian Prairie Unit District 204) in just over a week and we're excited about that."
According to the severance agreement signed late Thursday, Betts resigned his post "because of philosophical and operational differences." Neither Betts nor district officials would discuss his reasons further.
Betts' attorney, Shawn Collins, however, responded to a Daily Herald interview request Friday with a written statement.
"This is a situation where Daniel and the board realized that they did not see eye-to-eye on the basic direction of the park district, and how it should be managed. There is no one event that caused this realization, but rather a series of things over the past few months," Collins wrote. "(Betts) recognized that the board had the right to an executive director with whom it saw eye-to-eye; the board recognized the fact that Daniel had relocated his wife and two young children to Naperville from Denver, and that, once he left the park district, finding another comparable job would likely be difficult."
As for the district, Hart said business director Mindy Munn will resume a familiar role as acting executive director. She served in that same capacity for nearly a year while the board was searching for Betts.
But Hart said she hopes Munn doesn't have to stay in the dual role for long.
"That woman is incredible but it's not fair to her," Hart said. "I'd really like to see someone come in and give that woman a break. If we had two Mindys, that would be great."
Hart doesn't think she'll be waiting long and said she's already been contacted by four park directors from across the state about the vacancy.
"As much as Naperville likes to make fun of the park district, we are still one of the most outstanding districts out there," she said. "And anyone would be honored to work for us."
