I decided to attend the meeting last night because the AD was going to be there asking questions and I had a few to make sure my understanding is correct as I comment on the athletics issue. Others asked the questions I was going to before I got the chance- and that was fine by me.
Athletics issues on this post :
The issue / rumor of grandfathering just won't go away - the latest being that there is 1 NV Lacrosse player already with a 'waiver' and that the 4 freshman girls on NV Basketball team will also qualify under some state rule allowing them to stay. I am researching this with both the UEC and IHSA - to date I have found nothing in writing - but have been told by the IHSA that they will not make a blanket call ( as we are hearing re: the kids/team might not be able to play ) before anything is presented to them. It is a SD- Conference call first.
Even Candidate Cathy Piehl has stated in a forum/interview that there already is a process in place "Exception process is in place already. People should know that if exceptions are requested for competitive activities, then their teams may not be allowed to participate due to attendance waivers." ( If this was cross conference IHSA might rule that way - this is not )
I really hope one hand knows what the other is doing when it comes to this, as if leaders are repeating over and over ' no exceptions' and then a number of exceptions show up - expect a lot of anger.
Jim stated explicitly that no freshman team players would be staying at their current school- and Tom seconded that.
Other news:
Still no Girls volleyball coach - they have to go outside the district as the coaches inside did not want the position. Jim said it has to be a teacher and he would prefer a strong female role model ( if possible) -
In such a high profile ( as Jim stated also) girls sport this is surprising that it couldn't be filled within 204.
As far as JV teams - that will depend for mot sports on how many kids they have that want to and can play. They will play a Sophomore schedule.
Some sports info - where available is up on the Athletics 2000 web site.
They will try and run try out schedules like currently done at WVHS but it appears some kinks still being worked out
Camps not announced yet should be within a few weeks- they will be held @ WVHS - Indian Plains - Grainger etc. as they get space. The following year more camps will be available.
Turf will be ready August 1 is the target - track still needs to be built there.
FWIW - I think the AD will do a good job long term based on interaction and background. It's a shame we couldn't give him a full deck to start with.
