If Jill Smith's criteria for credible candidates (Fence Post April 1) for the District 204 school board are followed, voters are left with one candidate.
The recommendation committee of the Indian Prairie Education Association and the Indian Prairie Classified Association interviewed 11 of the 12 candidates. They were Dawn DeSart, Cathy Piehl, Michael Crockett, Michael Strick, Ye-ming Huang, Susan Rasmus, Mark Rising, Eric Hepburn, Doug DiFusco, Don Moscato and Jerry Huang.
They all sought our endorsement, participated in the interview, and answered a lengthy and detailed questionnaire. Christine Vickers did not show for her interview slot. The only candidate who did not respond to our invitation was Janey Wagner. Therefore, according to Ms. Smith, Wagner is the only credible school board candidate in District 204. As we look back over time, most of our school board members should not have been elected by the voters if one uses Ms. Smith's criteria.
2007 - Curt Bradshaw, Alka Tyle and Mark Metzger all sought the unions' endorsement. The only candidates that did not were Knight and Calcatierra.
2005 - Jeannette Clark, John Stephens, Bruce Glawe and Jim Box sought the unions' endorsement as did all the other candidates but one. Jim Box did not receive the endorsement, and in 2005 Christine Vickers never responded to our invitation.
2003 - Mark Metzger along with other candidates sought the unions' endorsement. Mr. Metzger was endorsed.
Ms. Smith's arguments would classify these current school board members as having "disqualified themselves." If seeking endorsement by the teachers union disqualifies any candidate who did so, then this illogical argument leaves you with only one choice. Voters can only vote for the one candidate who did not even attempt to be interviewed - Janey Wagner. That argument, Ms. Smith, is untenable.
