Parents will have a new way to access student bus route information this year. Starting August 15, parents will be able to visit the district's website and type in their home address to access bus route information. The district is launching this new user-friendly system to provide more accurate information that can be easily updated for parents. The district will also continue to post bus routes at school buildings beginning August 15.
Two other changes are also planned this year. All middle and high school students will be required to show their student ID before boarding the bus and all kindergarten through eighth grade students will have assigned seats on the bus. Students will select their own seats once school begins and can change seats at the semester. These changes are being made to assist with student safety and management on the buses.

Heh, good luck with that assigned seat thing. Have fun with it - you're gonna need "seat cops" Can I buy a First Class seat next? Is there Economy Plus?

No this isn't going to take up any additional time in the morning - not at all. However, I do know that on the last day of school this year, there was a student who had not attended 204 all year, came to Granger, on the bus, spent the day, and went home on the bus. (And her parents apparently thought this was okay) Maybe some complaints were lodged and that is why the ID thing came about?
Edited to add - I just told my 8th grader this, and she said that's going to be hard when they don't even get id's until after the school year starts. I didn't even think of that...

I think it's more likely due to the earlier incident where the bus driver kicked the girl off the bus mid-route because she didn't have the proper note. Questions were raised regarding whether the bus drivers even know who is supposed to be on the bus. Requiring an ID seems sensible to me.

Yep, just wait until the first sub-zero morning, when mom & dad have already pulled away for work, and the bus driver abandons a kid on the side of the road.

We were told that students would need their student id's to ride the bus at the Still parent orientation. The orientation was several weeks before the Scullen student was kicked off the bus. Still said it was being tested on several bus routes in the Hill attendance area.

Still said it was being tested on several bus routes in the Hill attendance area. It was going to happen after spring break @ Hill but was backed out because the new routes that they were also going to implement demanded that students move from existing safe stops to newer unsafe stops. As an example, in our immediate neighborhood it would have directed kids who had to walk 2 blocks tops crossing no major artery roads in the neighborhood (during morning rush of cars vacating the neighborhood and being dropped off right as the Elementary school parents (aka Mario Andretti) would be rushing in or exiting with mad chaos) to going 6-8 blocks across multiple artery streets in the neighborhood. Thankfully cooler heads prevailed for the remainder of the 2008/09 school year and the initial routes were left in place.
