My wife was involved with the McDonalds All American basketball team for years and we attended all the games and were close to the players - coaches all weekend. Vast majority from public schools - if what you said was true that would not be the case.
Why did Kevin Garnett play for Farragut his one year here and not for a private school ? Because Ronnie Fields was @ Farragut - that's why. Farragut gave him the biggest stage.

some good examples there DOC, but the PSL is the place to be for boys and girls hoops in most big cities. competition,exposure etc. across the board not so much. on the whole, privates have an advantage because there is more to offer IMO

for women's sports volleyball may be the largest and best example - psosibly along with basketball -- without a true revenue producing sport the 'prize' if you will becomes the scholarship money as opposed to future pro potentials
the competition amongst club volleyball is likely the fiercest of all women's sports as it is the best organized

I am rarely on this board. I even forgot the website. I just recently found it and wish I could have chimed in earlier. I too have a sophmore student who had to leave Neuqua and now is at Waubonsie. Now that we have experienced both schools I feel I can offer a opinion. My child's experience her first couple of weeks was extremely rough. The kids were not welcoming and I blame the parents for that. I was disgusted over the things she was telling me. Our next impression was at the pig roast. I went with my younger children. We were met with two large fights. A paddy wagon pulled up. Arrests were made. Yes, there are problems at Neuqua, but I never felt threatened at a social event. I did not feel that it was safe for my children to be there. We were right in the thick of the fight. As for the dress code. My child stated the same thing as Casey's daughter. The dress code is not enforced at Waubonsie. Also, texting during class is also not enforced. As for the building itself there are major inequalities between the two schools now three. I hope to god there is never a real fire in that building because with the crowding and the poor layout I am sure there will be many fatalities. On the other hand I do have some positive things I do like about the school. I love my daughters counselor, I think he has been a great help. I am also happy that there are less kids in her class (less competition for sporting events and class rank).

Ok, these might seem minor to some but they aren't to others.

Can anyone tell me why the heck Waubonsie cannot do their athletic registration on-line? I can go right on the Neuqua homepage and see track and field registration. No need to stand in line, fill out forms, rely on my kid for information, etc. Waubonsie? I can't find the registration material anywhere. When I inquired why we can't can't have registration on-line like Neuqua, I was simply told "we don't do it on-line". Well, that's no answer! Why in the heck can't it be on-line? Find out who the heck does it at Neuqa and ask them to help! It can't be THAT hard to set up. Even if it is is difficult initially, the long-term benefits would out weigh that.

Also, anyone know why the showers are in complete PATHETIC shape at Waubonsie? My daughter has sophomore swim and according to her the showers come out in an absolute trickle. There is NO water pressure whatsoever. She has mentioned it a couple of times to her PE teacher but nothing has changed. Come on! Is it that hard to get a work order to fix them? We can't just leave them the way they are. It is unfair to the students as well as the boys' swim team and community participants using them (Waubonsie Waves' swim team among others). Something as small as unworking showers sends a message to the students that we don't care about you.

Sounds like mineral build up over the years in the pipes or shower heads. Also, watch out for planters warts...

It can't be that hard to join the rest of the world in the 21st century - and like you said, why one place and not the other - one would think the program would be diistrict wide - why would we spend money to install in only one school ?
Of course rationalizing how 204 spends money is like banging ones head against the wall.


Also - not to derail this thread ( and if it does I will open a new one) but at VB tournaments this weekend I heard from a number of people who read the articles and information you post Mike...please conmtinue to do so. These people said they are sharing with others they know...

Does anyone know how old the track uniforms are at Waubonsie? The nylon shirt and shorts are DISGUSTING. They look like at one time they were green, gold, and white but now they just look washed out and filthy. I'm curious if anyone knows if there's some type of cycle on replacing uniforms? In other words how often do they add/retire/replace uniforms? If I had to guess by looking at these, I'm sure that they've been around for at least 10 years. The wind-suit sweat pants and jacket are dated but at least usable but the actual track uniform? No way! It's embarrassing that the Waubonsie kids will be expected to wear these.

How did Waubonsie get itself in this position that the AD and/or coaches (although there's a new coach this year so I can't blame him) do nothing about it. I hate to make the comparison but I assure you Neuqua does not have track uniforms anywhere near the condition of the Waubonsie ones.

The AD has been retired on the job as long as I can remember - that's how it happens. Along with the fact that now you have a school board president that is a Waubonsie alum-- I would appeal directly to him... I know he has pride in his school- maybe something can be done.
-- quite frankly however is people just did not complain enough over the years at the shabby treatment Waubonsie received... you heard lip service from everyone from Howie to Jeanette but no one has ever really addressed

p.s. - maybe they are waiting for the boosters they so badly wanted to pay for it all -- how sad is that ?

Well here's a blatant difference between the two high schools. Apparently if you want to take the ACT Revolution Prep course through the high schools, it's cheaper if you're a Waubonsie student. Yesterday I received two different packets from Revolution Prep (one for WV and one for NV). If my WV kid takes the class it costs $100 less! No joke. There's a little note on the bottom that says " Waubonsie Valley HS students are eligible for a $100 discount on their enrollment with Revolution Prep." Interestingly enough, the NV one says "In addition to group courses, Revolution also offers private tutoring as an option for students with extremely busy schedules and/or students who prefer 1-on1 preparation." Guess all the rich-folk in Neuqua can afford that but not the poor-folk at Waubonsie .

I recognize that Revolution Prep is the one that determines prices/programs and it is not the individual principals but none-the-less I found the different language on the flyers interesting.

Also, found it interesting that my child's Neuqua chemistry teacher made the comment that the first semester final exam was way too easy for her students because it was a test that is now district-wide. I followed that up with a question of "are you saying that Waubonsie students aren't taught the same material so the test must be watered-down?" She didn't have much of an answer to that. I felt like I could connect the dots though. Hmmm.....

And our district does nothing to help the image of Waubonsie by allowing WVHS to be the red headed step child when it comes to equipment- uniforms etc...there is NO equity in what the kids have to work with.

as far as the level of classes- I keep telling people this was made very clear to future MV parents at a meetng @ WVHS before MV opened. The class levels being taught are far from equal-- with some double secret probabtion plan t equal them out by 2012. Obviously they have started -- now you are seeing the result...

Neuqua Valley Varsity Poms - STATE CHAMPIONS!

This past weekend, the Neuqua Valley Varsity Pom team competed at the Team Dance Illinois State Championship. They took 1st place in their AAA Open Dance routine and 3rd place in their AAA Lyrical routine. This is the first State Championship for the Varsity Poms program. If your son/daughter has completed 30 hours or more of community service, please remind them to turn in all of their hours to the Senior Class House by March 15, 2010! Students that have 30 or more community service hours will have that listed on their final transcript and students with 50 or more community service hours will have their name in the Senior Awards Booklet at the Senior Awards Assembly in May.

Registration for AP Exams (MAY 3-14, 2010)

Reminders for AP exam registration: If necessary your student may submit a late registration from March 8-24th. However, there will be a $10 late fee PER EXAM. Checks for the AP Exams should be made payable to NVHS. Please include the student ID # and home telephone number on the check.

Deadline For Seniors To Turn in Scholarship Information

Please have your son/daughter turn in any scholarship he/she is accepting to the Senior Class House or the College/Career Center by Friday, April 30th!!! This includes ANY accepted scholarships (talent, athletic, academic, college specific, ROTC or any general/local scholarship). Have them bring in a photocopy of the award letter to the Senior Class House or to the College/Career Center by Friday, April 30th, absolutely NO LATER. Please know that only student names and the scholarship title will be in the booklet, amounts will not be included. If your son or daughter is accepting an appointment at one of the Military Academies, please have them let their counselor know as soon as possible.

Piano Men: A Tribute to the Music of Billy Joel and Elton John

On Friday, March 19, Neuqua music staff member Reid Spears will be performing a concert with his band entitled “Piano Men: A Tribute to the Music of Billy Joel and Elton John” in the Neuqua auditorium. The concert is a benefit to raise funds for the Tom Schlegel and David Scheidecker Memorial Funds. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m., and will also feature guest appearances by other members of the Neuqua music faculty. The cost of the tickets will be $10, with all profits going to the Memorial Funds. Tickets will go on sale beginning Wednesday, February 17. Please come out and support this worthy event.

Why can't our distict come up with some plan that is equitable? To me the homepage of each high school should be comparable, the newsetter format should be comparable, the offerings should be comparable, etc. It always appears that Neuqua tries to come up with a great idea and keeps it secret then it can play with the one-up-manship. Waubonsie seems to be the last to jump on board with any new idea.

Take a look at the Neuqua Wildcat Weekly and then look at the Waubonsie one. I ask if there's anyone who thinks they're comparable? If not, why aren't they?

Again, I don't think any of these things are "perceived". I think that they're "real" differences! Please recognize that when I put these differences out there, they are NOT criticism of Waubonsie but rather I look at them as an opportunity for Waubonsie to improve. One of my kids is at Neuqua and one is at Waubonsie. I see the differences at both. My WV kid is happy and so is my NV kid.

The WV format has to be detriment to parental involvement. Who is going to take the time to go through those links?

The most constant complaint I hear from WV parents is horrible communication.

We have this great listserv tool, why not use it like it's supposed to be used?

You're exactly right, falcon. Most people aren't going to take the time. 99% of the material doesn't apply to my family or I but I admit I'll read the Neuqua one just because it's there. It's highly unlikely that I'll click the link to the WV boy's hockey but if it were in front of me, I'd read it, ya know?

Agreed about the communication but sometimes I think there's a little too much from Neuqua. I have to admit my annoyance from getting all the robo calls that end with "Go Wildcats!" It starts wearing on me after awhile. Can there be a middle ground?

You need to scroll down past the "links" and you get all the information in the same format as NVHS. I agree it takes a little while to get used to it, but I think it's a really nice presentation. Too much stuff on the NVHS page. I stopped reading it after a while and nothing is bolded to jump out at you. I agree it would be nice, though to not get it in an 'upload' format.
