Artwork is going up on the walls, and the music groups are practicing.
That's just some of the prep work going on as Gregory R. Fischer Middle School gets ready to open its doors to the public this weekend.
A dedication and open house for Fischer Middle School will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the school, 1305 Long Grove Drive, Aurora. Between 300 and 400 people are expected to attend, Principal Jennifer Nonnemacher said.
"It's really a celebration of a lot of hard work that went into the planning and preparing of the building," Nonnemacher said.
Unlike the recent dedication of the new Metea Valley High School in the district, the dedication of Fischer also celebrates the career of its namesake, Gregory Fischer, who spent more than three decades with Indian Prairie District 204.
"Here was an educator who was an educator in our district for 32 years, and we're honoring him," Nonnemacher said. "It's just going to have a really good family feel to it."
Fischer is credited with leading the district's transition from a traditional junior high model to the district's current team-oriented approach of middle schools. The middle school model is a "whole child" approach that stresses the importance of social, emotional and intellectual growth.
This is District 204's seventh middle school. Greg Fischer, the school's namesake, will speak at the event, along with Superintendent Kathy Birkett; board President Curt Bradshaw; Naperville Mayor A. George Pradel and Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner.
"Also, it's the first time our music groups will perform," Nonnemacher said.
The ceremony is expected to last about 45 minutes, she said. A reception and open house will follow. Those who plan on attending are asked to RSVP at 630-375-3999 for planning purposes. Overflow parking is available across the street at Waubonsie Valley High School, if needed, Nonnemacher said.
