Youth Service Awards

Twelve high school students were identified as Naperville Service Award recipients during the annual award ceremony held at the Naperville Municipal Center with Mayor George Pradel and the City Council. The service awards were established to recognize and honor outstanding volunteer efforts by students and to encourage all youth to get involved in community service.
KidsMatter co-hosted the awards ceremony with the City of Naperville. The following District 204 students were recognized along with the agency where they volunteered: Stephanie Cheng (Naperville Public Library), Cody Cooper (Heritage YMCA Group), Blake Grigsby (Fair Lady Productions, Inc.), Michael Hardisty (Forest Preserve of Will County), Danielle Hoffer (Interact Club of Neuqua Valley High School), Courtney Kanak (Naperville Exchange/Junior Exchange Club), Corbin Mendoza (GiGi's Playhouse), Delaney Miller (NCO Youth and Family Services), Eric Sciortino (GiGi's Playhouse), Kelsey Stimple (Edward Hospital), and Tori Valenza (NCO Youth and Family Services).

Neuqua Valley

The Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association selected Neuqua Valley High School's Paul Vandersteen as the 2009 Coach of the Year. Under Coach Vandersteen's direction, the Neuqua Valley Boys Cross Country team captured the state championship this year. This is the second time in three years that the team has captured the state title.

Waubonsie Valley Delegates
Sweep Primary Elections

Waubonsie Valley High School's Youth and Government delegates had a record setting night when they won primary elections for five major state offices and had four committee chairs selected at the Youth and Government session held in December. The following students will advance to the March general assembly elections at the State Capitol in Springfield: Janesh Rahlan (Governor), Dan Cronin (Chief Justice), Chris Fernandez (Lieutenant Governor), Rani Shah (Secretary of State), and Sean Foots (Presiding Officer). Pulkit Goel, Andy Goldberg, Nick Stefani, and Kenny Wang were selected as committee chairs.

Neuqua Valley Teacher
Named a "Star Teacher"

Neuqua Valley High School math teacher Ann Liakas was named a "Star Teacher" by the GE Foundation. Liakas was nominated by a former student. The GE Foundation, the philanthropic organization of the General Electric Company, supports U.S. and international education, the environment, public policy, human rights, and disaster relief.
