Two Waubonsie Valley students and two parents have been arrested at the Aurora high school in the aftermath of an altercation between the two teens on a bus.
The arrests came after an eventful week at the school at 2590 Ogden Ave. in which police also were called to investigate another allegedly violent incident.
In the first case, a 16-year-old female student allegedly struck another student in the face while boarding a school bus. She was arrested Thursday and charged with battery.
The victim, in turn, was arrested for disorderly conduct for allegedly sending a threatening e-mail to another student.
Parents of the student charged with battery later were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after “allegedly hollering, swearing and continuously arguing with a school official and the school resource officer over the arrest of their daughter,” Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said in a statement.
The parents’ names were not released because, by doing so, their daughter’s identity would be revealed, police said. Police do not identify juveniles.
The parents both will appear Feb. 8 in DuPage County court. The students were referred to DuPage juvenile court authorities.
Initially, school officials and police said they believed the altercation was related to another situation at the school earlier in the week.
Aurora police now say they think that earlier incident, which occurred Monday, is unrelated to Thursday’s arrests.
Officials said they’re still investigating leads after an 18-year-old Waubonsie Valley student told them three males used guns to beat him outside the school about 8:45 p.m. Monday after he finished playing intramural basketball.
The victim told police the suspects fled in a burgundy-colored, four-door vehicle. The victim refused medical attention.
In a letter sent through the school’s online listing, Principal Jim Schmid told parents that after investigating the situation, officials still are uncertain what happened.
“What we do know is that following intramurals on Monday night … non-WVHS students confronted WVHS students outside the building. A WVHS student reported being injured in the confrontation, but the police stated that the victim had no visible signs of abuse and refused medical treatment,” Schmid wrote in the mailing sent Wednesday.
“The allusion to alleged weapons … is also still under investigation. Police and WVHS staff are continuing their efforts.”
The incidents are rare in a year that school officials would otherwise characterize as uneventful, Schmid said.
“We had very minimal difficulties at the school all year; that’s why we see this as particularly disappointing,” he said.
