Crouse retiring, Daeschner steps in

Stephen Daeschner has a lot on his plate these days.
As District 204's next superintendent, Daeschner left the house-hunting up to his wife and two daughters so he can focus on wrapping things up in Kentucky.
The family took advantage of the holiday weekend, as his wife and daughter met with a real estate agent and he met with his future staff at the district office.
"Howie (Crouse) has been wonderful," Daeschner said. "He has been keeping me informed. On any question, he has given me great insight."
Crouse is set to retire June 30. Daeschner will retire from his post as superintendent of Jefferson County Public Schools in Kentucky and take over in District 204.
"Today I had an open house to meet the staff here and we had a good conversation," he said.
He said both districts are structured similarly, but Jefferson County is much larger with 98,000 students, 135 schools and 22 other learning centers such as magnet schools.
He is starting to pack things up in his office in Kentucky, but has devoted much of his free time to preparing for the Senior Olympics. The event, which is expected to draw 10,000 people to Louisville, will be held June 22 to July 7.
Daeschner, 65, has signed up to compete in four road bike races, the longest being 40K, or just less than 25 miles.
"I am very excited," said Daeschner, who rode 170 miles over the past three days to help prepare for the event.
In Kentucky, he would sometimes ride his bike 12 miles to work. He is anxious to scout out the local bike shops in the area so he can start taking in the new, less hilly terrain.
As for the house-hunting, Daeschner is not picky on which high school his daughters will attend.
"I want to be in the district, that's it," he said. "It does not matter what high school, they are both great schools and wherever we find a house, that is where they will go."
The school board hired Daeschner in February to a three-year contract with a salary of $225,000.
