Participation in the day of silence is optional. My daughter has done it. The world needs to be aware the gay and lesbian kids are being harrassed and killed. They have the right to live without harrassment. Do we need to raise awareness aware of it in school by dedicating a day? We can't have every cause covered - one each day and we could forget the whole learning thing altogether. Who decides which causes are righteous? You? Me? I'm also curious, how many gay kids were killed in DuPage county last year? The year before? The previous 20? I'd be the first to give anyone who did that a nice seat in the chair (sorry we can't do that 'cause of our prison bound former Gov) or lock them up in a very dark place and throw away the key. How many kids die every day worldwide from starvation? lack of water? Malaria? The Flu? Abuse? Simply being born a girl? I guess my point is that yes, what you describe is atrocious and unaccpetable in society - teach that in a class, absolutely - is it of such higher priority over the other evils of the world that we need to single it out as "a day". By doing so, in some people's view (not mine), we promote something they feel is sacrilegious . If they feel that way they have a right to. It's not for me to tell them otherwise or that they can not say how they feel. It is for the school to tell them that can't make a T-Shirt about it and wear it to school.

As someone who knows, due to my position, I can tell you that noone in the past 15 years has been killed in DuPage due to their sexual orientation.
