Turner Awarded $106 Million Contract by The Washington Unified School District to Construct New High School in West Sacramento, Calif.

Sacramento, Calif., Nov. 30, 2006 - Turner Construction Company has been selected by The Washington Unified School District to provide construction management services for a $106 million high school in West Sacramento. The school is scheduled to be completed and ready for students in the fall of 2008.

The scope of work includes construction of a 283,000-sq.-ft. high school to accommodate 2,000 students on a total of 80 acres. The new West Sacramento High School will consist of multi-story buildings, a gymnasium, theater, and extensive athletic playing fields.

The project will include a joint use facility shared with the City of West Sacramento. This facility houses a physical education and recreation center consisting of swimming pools, locker rooms, basketball courts and a rock climbing wall and will be shared by both the students and the residents of West Sacramento. The agreement with the city helped the school district with funding as well as saving West Sacramento the costly construction of a stand-alone facility.

“We are proud to have been selected by The Washington Unified School District to build this new facility for the students and the community of West Sacramento,” said Frank Dai Zovi, vice president and general manager of Turner’s Sacramento office.

Why does everything happen much more slowly for us? It can't just be because of the snow and bad weather.

The definitely have dedicated some time to making sure they take advantage of the latest technology in the school, and don't get burned by bad planning.

I hope as well, but I almost doubt it, based on the comments I read on this board everyday.

I can just hear the whiners now . . .

10 ethernet ports in a lab?? 6 would be enough!! Now I'll have to pay $.05 a year more in taxes. How will I feed my family? This is not what I voted for! How can they be spending my money like this. They'll have to come back with another referendum in two years asking for a dozen more ports--damm you SB!!

I can almost guarantee you that we will settle for, for example, on slower wireless, or CAT 5e instead of 6 and no fiber because we can get that stuff for cheaper now.

Later, those same people will piss and moan about how we did things cheaply and cannot move data over the slow connections and what a crappy job the SB did in deciding this.

Gatormom had a good example of this phenomenon in another case:

-During the referendum fight, the CRAFT people said they wanted to save money by defeating the referendum.

-Now that we are trying to get a cheap price for the land, and build a school before building costs skyrocket, the CRAFT people have disappeared into the woodwork and won't lift a finger to help their community. It seems like these "experts of cheapness" could play a pivotal role in the battle to save the day, but no......

Unfortunately, this type of phenomenon is all too common. It is, and always will be, only about "me" for these people. Do not get me wrong. There is an aspect of "for me" in there for myself, but I think it is nicely balanced with what I think is good for the community.

I just do not believe CRAFT and their ilk think that way.
