Just want to make sure. The criteria for a walker is 1.5 mile raduis from school - correct? (as the crow flies?)This is a pretty close approximation. also where exactly on this map is the bridge? I used the scale on the map. I thought it seemed too large. Help me out here. Per the scale it should be 1 mile from 248th to Rt 59 on 95th st. Is that right? ---------- i don't think it is 'as the crow flies'. ES & MS students are supposed to walk on sidewalks or paths, cross in crosswalks- not cut thru peoples' yards and wade thru ponds ;D. ...and 1.5 miles right/left is a little over 1 miles as the crow flies

I personally never understood the 1.5 mile. Like any kid is going to walk 1.5 mile to a school.

I think the bottom line here is we are now acknowledging Fry has walkers. Welch has walkers. Neigther has 100%. Steck, McCarty, and areas near Meta have walkers. Why should't we want to have all these kids walk? It would save transportation costs for the district as a whole. The schools that are on busses now in a perfect world would see a shorter commute with a 3rd school, but the reality is they may not. The current proposal has kids spread out all over the place. Instead of evenly spreading the pain, maybe we could try to minimize it for as many as possible. There are ways to do North, south and central boundaries with no splits. It may even be possible to work the numbers so that with a few redone elementary boundaries there can be no splits, and keep all walkers as walkers. Has it been tried? Have we asked? Let's not play that game. Lets all play with the numbers and see what we come up with. The location of the 3 high schools, with the location of some of our elementary schools will make it tough, but let's try.

Like any kid is going to walk 1.5 mile to a school. --------- i think the state will only reimburse if 1.5 miles or over(or hazardous)- the state could change that if parents complain to the SBs, and the SBs complain to the state! i think it's too far esp if you have a musical instrument, gym bag or a lot of books, esp in MS & HS.

I wouldn't say that.
Impossible with 7 middle schools.

I personally never understood the 1.5 mile. Like any kid is going to walk 1.5 mile to a school. I always thought it a long distance. I live about 1.2 miles SE of Watts - we moved here before Kindergarten for my oldest in 1990 - and I thought that was a long distance to ask a K kid to walk each way ( especially with these 20 pound backpacks they have today)-- but I am sure it is all driven by funding. Now about a year here, they closed the most direct street to Watts for a year as they were still building the area - and since it was deemed hazardous we had bussing.

When I am driving around 95th to Book St in the morning, its like I get run over by walkers. Please the only thing that goes through my head as I fight not to get run down by all the personal cars is wow these kids have awesome cars Surely beat by Chevy chevet I drove to hs... Or if I work from home its like the wagon train when the mini vans and SUVs descend on Peterson. (I know, I know. We do not have any sidwalks) Do I have a point.. no..

You know gas prices are too high, when there isn't a line of cars to pick up their kids at the grade school.

I remember being so mad at my parents for not driving me because it completely messed up my big 80's hair. I used to use a whole can of final net hair spray to keep the volume in bad weather.
