In the corporate world, either the president or supervisor of the company would have to sit face to face with the person they were letting go-it's the ugly part of the job. That is what you are getting paid for. Is it easy, of course not. What it does do is put a little reality into a very bad situation. I am really mad about this. If there are any teachers out there who read this board, I for one, as a taxpayer, am sorry at the lack of compassion expressed by our administration. I agree 100%. If someone has to be let go, then do it in the most polite and respectable way that affords everyone dignity. Anything less is chickensh!t.

Recognize that we don't know for sure that teachers actually received emails notifying them of their demise. Some teachers did receive a face-to-face meeting with principals and administrators. Maybe some were sent an email but I doubt seriously if that was the main communication. IF that turns out to be the truth, then I would be shocked and so disappointed (but then again when have I not been shocked and disappointed). Remember, I was the first one to jump to MM's defense about his MF email. I posted there was no way that rumor was true - well, I sure was shocked and disappointed by that one.
I do know there were some ES teachers crying and talking to their students yesterday about being let go. Now that's wrong - that information should never be shared with elementary kids. I still think that even with all this doom-and-gloom the majority of the teachers that were RIFd yesterday will still get their jobs backed but perhaps I'm just naive.

I re qualified my initial response also to - if this is true...but then I have no reason to doubt the student, and what they were told... I too thought the M2 letter info was bogus, that he couldn't be that stupid..but lo and behold ! I am far from as confident that most of the teachers will be rehired because we have painted ourselves into a corner ( along with the state's help) - that they cannot emerge from.

In the corporate world it is the lowly 1st line manager who does this. I know because I lived thru 10 + years of resource actions, when in management. Later as a 2nd line manager you then talk to the people after the 1st line has delivered the news as humanely as possible, to not make the people feel like it was in any way their fault... e-mail-- my God !

My initial thought is that layoff by e-mail is completely heartless, lazy, and unethical.
[cynic on]
But the more I think about it, maybe it shouldn't be like the corporate world that most of us have to operate in. The union gets special perks we would love...maybe they have to give up the expectation of professional, corporate treatment.
[\cynic off]
Of course, I am not serious about that...I think this, if true, is simply indicative of a lazy, cowardly admin.

What my son told me is that they all received e-mails. If you got an e-mail that told you to attend a meeting in the LMC after school that meant you were being laid off but re-hired. If you didn't, you are done. So my supposition is that the decision on who to hire and fire has been made already. He also told me that some teachers just packed up their stuff and left - there were many subs yesterday. I'm sure the last 3 months of school are going to be fab with the teacher knowing she doesn't have a job.
My daughter in middle school heard that the principal actually called all the teachers to a meeting and told them face-to-face so I don't know if it was a building decision or if she just chose to do it this way. I'm just so appalled at the district in so many ways right now. I really didn't think the sh!t would hit the fan so quickly, I thought we had a year or 2...

A number of people have been trying to get the word out for years now that by the SD's OWN paperwork- they were looking at significant deficits over the next 4 years - starting around $4M-$7M & peaking at as much as $74M ! When some candidates put those numbers out during the campaign they were ridiculed by the current SB members and their allegiance of lemmings as ridiculous, and fear tactics. Well who was telling the truth and who was lying ? The CFO organization who I , nor anyone I know was ever affiliated with, put out numbers that turns out now were dead on. We were all told they were a pack of lies...well ? I was just askingmyself the same question, for those not returning what kind of education is going to be provided to kids who had them as teachers ? Either a potentially unqualified ( for that area) sub, or a teacher who wants no part of this district any more. Either way the student and taxpayers lose again. Meanwhile we have some Admin ( some of whom were retired on the job 10 years ago IMHO) making $150K+ that bring nothing to the table -

We reap what we sow.... Current and past SB membersinvolved in the tradegy of events that has lead us here should not be able to look at themselves in the mirror everyday (all except one lone SB member who tried rather meekly to stem the tide of destruction)

Good to see you posting southern wolf. That board member you speak of worked hard to let the general public know her side. Unfortunately not many were in the mood to take notice.
It is always hard to be the swimmer against the current especially without a partner, or even a life preserver.

Meanwhile we have some Admin ( some of whom were retired on the job 10 years ago IMHO) making $150K+ that bring nothing to the table - As many have said Doc, the District had many chances to correct course and many signs of what was on the way. First, the District ignored what the community preferred to satisfy our capacity needs. winsome.cnchost.com/MAC/Beacon082205.pdfwinsome.cnchost.com/MAC/8_18_2005SurveyResults.pdfThen in 2006 there was the "Leadership Profile Report" presented to the Board winsome.cnchost.com/MAC/Profile_Rept_10.26.06.pdfParagraph 4 "The primary challenge ...", points out a number of things, especially the last two sentences. Growth has been slowing for some time, winsome.cnchost.com/MAC/NapervilleResidentialPermits1999_2009Q1.pdfIn spite of the warnings, the District forged ahead with ADK in August 2007 as a revenue getter... creating even more dependence on the State for revenues ipsdweb.ipsd.org/News.aspx?id=15381Then they had the PMA projections of March 08, winsome.cnchost.com/MAC/PMAanalysis2008.pdf that they didn't bother sharing with the community, showing enrollment was tracking no where near the 10,200 HS kids. Yet they forged ahead with the third HS, ignoring the obvious (that CV pointed out in that April 08 meeting). Then they had the PMA projections of Dec 2008 showing the deficits to come, winsome.cnchost.com/MAC/PMAProjections12-8-08.pdf (page 2) which also show the growth revenue at an end by looking at the educational fund balance, again, page 2. It peaked in 2007. Then they had the countless times the State came out regarding it's own fiscal problems. www.state.il.us/budget/FY2010/FY2010_Budget_Briefing.pdfTo say this is the State's fault .... defies logic and misrepresents why we are at this point.

Like maybe school closings? you'll have to align yourself with the chosen few who get to attend those secret back door meetings- many of which have likely already occurred..decided what schools and when.... maybe we can ge a copy of another pencil scrubble sheet to pass for the new boundary work and bus routes..

I would like to know why the deadline for notifying teachers of layoffs is over two months before the end of the school year. Was it another thing that was collectively bargained for the union? If so, it's just another example of the kids not mattering as much as the union membership's self interest. This is going to be absolutely horrible for the kids whose teachers were told they would be let go. Thanks again D204!
Where can we find out if our kid's teacher is one of the 145?

I do have it on very solid authority that at least one department handled it by the department head talking to all in their department at WVHS... I can only speak for one team, but at least someone handled it correctly-- hopefully there were more who did the same.
