Indian Prairie Unit District 204 and its teachers union have reached a tentative agreement on a two-year contract, officials said Monday.
District and Indian Prairie Education Association officials would not discuss details of the proposed pact.
But sources familiar with the negotiations said the first year of the contract calls for a freeze on all salary and step increases. It also requires teachers to pay a greater share of their own insurance costs.
Language for the second year of the contract is still being hammered out, sources said. Teachers will receive a small salary bump, but also will be responsible for paying additional insurance costs.
Union President Val Dranias will present the proposed deal to the group's 2,170 members during a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Neuqua Valley High School.
She also will host a question-and-answer session for members at 4:15 p.m. Friday at Metea Valley High School. Teachers will vote May 27 in their buildings to ratify or reject the proposed agreement.
The school board will vote on the proposed pact after the union vote.
Both Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Nancy Valenta and Dranias declined to comment on specific details.
"The process was civil but tough on both sides," Dranius said. "We all have to deal with the reality of the economy and the district's financial status and several other factors that I won't discuss until I present this to the members Wednesday."
The district is facing a projected $21.4 million budget deficit for next year. It already has approved cost-saving measures that include the release of 145 nontenured staff, increased fees in several departments and cuts to several programs.
District 204 covers portions of Naperville, Aurora, Plainfield and Bolingbrook.
