< >
Head Coach: Brad Baker
Conference: East Suburban Catholic
2009 Record: 35-5 (8-2)
IHSA Enrollment: 2,196.15 (multiplier)
Benet Academy a Top Threat in Class 4A
Benet Academy is turning into a volleyball factory. After winning a IHSA Class 4A second place trophy in 2008, the Redwings advanced to the Class 4A Supersectional a season ago. Their run came to an end with a hard-fought two set loss to Quincy (23-25, 24-26). The Redwings finished with a (35-5) overall record last year. "Last season we won 35 matches with only two starters back, and both of them playing new positions. This year, with six players back that started at some point, the expectations are extremely high," head coach Brad Baker said.
Two of those starters have committed to play division-one volleyball. Lara Ontko (5'11" Sr. Outside Hitter) has committed to the University of Mississippi. Meghan Haggerty (6'2" Jr. Outside Hitter) has committed to play at the University of Wisconsin. Other starters returning are; Alyson Farm (5'11" Sr. Outside Hitter), Kaitlyn King (5'9" Sr. Setter), Grace Giradot (5'11" Sr. Libero), and Jenna Jendryk (6'0" Jr. Setter/Outside Hitter).
"In total, we return eleven players who were with us during last year's playoff run. We have experience and depth, as everyone on the roster projects to be a future college volleyball player." Rounding out the roster for the Redwings are; Kathleen Severyn (5'10" Sr. Libero), McKenzie Kuhn (6'1" Jr. Middle), Gabby Pethokoukis (6'3" Jr. Middle), Shannon O'Brien (5'9" Jr. Libero), Mary Kate Whelan (5'10" Jr. Outside Hitter), Annie Ferlman (5'10" Jr. Outside Hitter), Emily Thron (5'8" Jr. Setter), Sarah Jane Pavlik (5'10" Jr. Setter), Nora Young (6'1" Jr. Outside Hitter), Darcy Cadman (5'11" Jr. Middle), Hannah Kaminsky (5'11" So. Setter), and Madeline Haggerty (6'0" Fr. Outside Hitter).
"We are pretty big and have decent athletes as we have six players who are at least six feet tall and all of our hitters touch in the range of 9'7 to 10'3, with three players that touch 9'10 or higher."
Benet Academy finished the 2009 season ranked #3 by the Daily Herald, #5 by the Chicago Tribune, and #6 by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Former Benet Academy players at the collegiate level are; Meghan Bryne (Washington University), Gina Finke (Yale), Brianne Riley (Kansas), and Sierra Young (Cornell).
Brad Baker is in his fourth season as head coach at Benet Academy. His overall record is (109-11). A winning percentage of 91%. He has led the Redwings to three regional titles, two sectional championships, and a Class 4A runner-up finish.
