Dear Neuqua Valley Families,
Tonight, Neuqua Valley mourns the loss of one of our students, junior Kyle Zuleg, who passed away today. We will share funeral arrangements once that information is announced. Social workers and counselors will provide support at school for students as long as necessary. Please encourage your student to visit his or her class house for support if needed. Kyle’s family wanted the Neuqua Valley community to know that in Kyle’s spirit of compassion, he will be providing the gift of life through organ donation.
Our entire school staff and Crisis Team has prepared to provide assistance and support tomorrow for students and staff members impacted by this loss. Counselors, social workers, psychologists, and members of our Crisis Team will be available for counseling and assistance.
Parents can help children cope with the death of a classmate through the following:
1. Give your child an opportunity to talk about the death. Ask how the day went once they were at school with their friends.
2. Encourage them to talk about their feelings. If this is difficult for them, ask, "How did others react?" This gives them permission to talk about their own feelings.
3. Ask your child if there is anything you can do to help them right now. Talk about how you handle tragic events, and help them brainstorm things that might help them cope with this event. What things have worked for them in the past when they have felt stressed or upset?
4. Maintain a non-judgmental attitude. Remember there is no right or wrong way to experience a loss.
5. Encourage them to talk with their teachers, counselor, or social worker at school.
Questions about Kyle, his accomplishments at Neuqua Valley High School, and our plans to support students and staff members impacted by this loss can be directed to Dr. Robert McBride, Principal, 630-428-6010 or bob_mcbride@ipsd.org.
Sincerely,
