Well at least it's a short drive from Metea
District 204 is moving its high school graduation ceremonies for 2012 from College of DuPage's facility to Northern Illinois University's Convocation Center.
The decision was made for several reasons. While College of DuPage has hosted District 204's graduation ceremonies for many years, a major construction project going on at COD creates some safety concerns for our large graduation crowds. During one of our graduations last year, severe weather triggered the need to stop the ceremony so attendees could seek shelter. Should that situation occur again, the college's emergency plan to accommodate this year's construction requires heading outdoors and crossing a courtyard to a building approximately 1,000 feet away. Construction also eliminates graduates' processional, check-in rooms, and on-site space for students to return their gowns and pick-up their diplomas.
The move to NIU's Convocation Center presents some wonderful opportunities that were not available at COD. NIU's $36 million facility has a much greater seating capacity, allowing a significant increase in tickets from the number currently made available to family members with graduation at COD. The facility offers state-of-the-art technology, including use of the "jumbotron" screens to enhance watching the ceremony. NIU is also less expensive, representing an approximate $12,000 savings for the district. Many other schools successfully use the Convocation Center for graduation, and we are confident the facility will provide a great experience for our graduates and their families.
All three high schools will hold their graduation at the Convocation Center on May 27, 2012. Parents will receive information this week directly from their high schools about ceremony times and additional details.
