Attorney: Metea site poses risks

Attorney Shawn Collins, who represents NFSOC in its lawsuit against District 204, maintains that it is inaccurate to say there are no environmental dangers at the Eola site for Metea Valley High School.
"It would also be inaccurate to say that the district's consultant 'reports' - at least the ones that I have seen - prove that the property is safe," he said in an e-mail sent Friday afternoon to The Sun. "In fact, those reports either confirm the dangers, or raise only more serious questions."
Collins contends that the study of electromagnetic fields on and near the property detected more than 100 locations where there was the presence of radiation levels associated "with an increased risk in childhood leukemia and other serious diseases," according to a dozen medical studies he cites. And Collins also notes that reports on the high-pressure natural gas pipelines buried underneath the length of the property only recite standards for operating and investigating the lines. They say nothing about whether Natural Gas Pipeline of America has obeyed those standards, and no facts have been furnished about the pipelines' condition, said Collins.
"Finally, the fact that the soil contamination tests and related environmental work have been shrouded in secrecy to this point speaks for itself," he said.
Collins claims "it has been publicly disclosed" that contamination was found in the soil, and he wants to know what kind of contamination, what kind of chemicals were tested for and whether the rest of the property has undergone the same testing. Collins also wonders who - District 204 or Midwest Generation - would be financially responsible for cleaning up any contamination found - now, or in the future - or any injury alleged to have been caused by it.
