Young Neuqua teachers provide counterbalance
This letter is in response to Bruce Onsager's thoughts in "Parents, teachers make difference in education," published Sunday. The writer asserted that Neuqua's "young teachers lack sufficient understanding of the material or experience in teaching to be fully effective."
As a recent Neuqua Valley graduate and current Northwestern University sophomore, I could not disagree more.
Neuqua's "young" teachers provide a counterbalance and diversity of perspective to their more seasoned colleagues who have set the standards for excellence. Many of these teachers have recently graduated from prestigious collegiate programs and are familiar with the latest developments, theories and technology in their respective fields.
Whether explaining leading-edge theories in physics or new interpretations of classic Western literature, they exhibit a keen understanding of their material and instill intellectual excitement and curiosity in all students they serve - regardless of race, academic standing or subdivision. These teachers also provide a realistic picture of the current college life and openly share the benefit of their recent experiences with students.
Neuqua's teachers, regardless of years in the field, are a unique asset to the district. I had to smile at the number of parents assisting high school students with homework due to the purported deficiencies of the staff.
I hope that in the future I'll be able to recall the basics of wide ranging subjects so that I can assist my future children. If not, I'll rest secure knowing that the "young" teachers of today will be the experienced teachers of tomorrow still instructing students as ably as they did me.
