The Metea Valley colors and mascot were chosen by the students who would have been attending the school under the previous boundary plan.
The set of kids who will be attending there now includes many kids who thought they'd be going to WV.
At a board meeting last month after a speaker said the new group of kids should get to re-choose the boundaries, one of the SB members said they agreed (Bruce Glawe?) and the kids should get to do this.
However, today Kathy Birkett reported that the colors and mascot absolutely WILL NOT be done over again. The kids will get to choose the school song, newpaper and yearbook names and make other decisions.
I think this is completely unfair. As far as I know many of these kids already think they will have a say in making the mascot and color choice and this was a small concession considering they will be attending a school in just 18 months that is different from what they'd planned.
(No, kids moving from NV will not get to choose things for WV but that's a whole different situation)

Did she say why not? How difficult would it be to let the kids do this?

What if the school is never built. And what if the boundaries are changed after the 2009 elections?
Its just another case of adding insult to injury by letting kids choose colors and then ripping their school away from them.

Looking back at notes from site selection night - it was John Stephens who said the kids should re-vote.

She also said the school will absolutely open in 2009 barring unless we have something like earthquake or fire. The new principal is to be named in the next few weeks and there is a timeline in place for hiring the various people needed.

I know you have kids in the pipeline much sooner than I do momto4, but I guess I don't see this as that big of a deal. I assumed that the mascot/colors were already chosen just as the school name was. It would be nice of them to let the new kids pick, but maybe the wounds of the re-arranged would just be riled up more??

Momto4, I agree with you, the kids should get to pick colors and mascot. Personally I'd like the colors, mascot, AND NAME changed, as Metea will always be painful for me. That said, I consider this a small perceived inequity given all that's gone on this week. I realize your exhuberance to get started on your new school, but you've got 2 years - think maybe it could wait a week or two? If they picked this week, I would suggest black and blue.

Black and blue are very appropriate!
ETA: I think, as well, that the colors, mascot and name of the school should be changed.
Not just my opinion. My son (who voted on the mascot and colors) thinks the "new kids" should be able to pick their preferences.
He's proud to be a Warrior. No lie.

Out of respect for native americans, maybe it is the "warrior" mascot that should be replaced with a vote (think chief illiniwek). I'm a proud wvhs parent, but would never consider myself or my kids "warriors"..much too violent.

Blech. I hate PC.

AE's point was my first thought. Perhaps it's a sign of KB's confidence in this whole thing "sticking" - boundaries, site, 3rd HS

Believe me, I think you know that I am not insensitive to the pain felt by many here. I do not believe we have two years. If this decision is going to be redone it most likely would need to happen soon. *If* things are really going to happen on schedule. I don't know that I have any exuberance about anything this week to be honest with you. I brought it up today because this is something new that happened today and hadn't been mentioned here. I stayed away from the board during this boundary process and was hesitant to jump back in, I'm still not sure if I made the right choice.
