I love sky blue and gold!
Black and gold...yuck. Too old school and definitely reminiscent of the bumble bee.

I hope they don't select a color so close to Neuqua's colors. It needs to be distinct; red, black, purple but not a shade of blue. Fortunately, it is the kids who will go MVHS who will make the final choice.

I hope they don't select a color so close to Neuqua's colors. It needs to be distinct; red, black, purple but not a shade of blue. When I see NV awards jackets and uniforms, they are very dark blue. In fact, IHSA web site gives official NVHS school colors as "Navy and Gold". To me, black for MVHS would be too close to NV's dark/navy blue. To me, light blue is more of a contrast to navy than black. Surrounding schools Naperville Central, Plainfield North, and East Aurora all are red. If "distinct" is a highest priority, one would go with purple. In my opinion, sky blue also fits the "distinct" criteria but yes, to a lesser degree. I submit that red or black (Streamwood is also black and gold) do NOT meet the distinct criteria. With all that said, I hope the kids develop their own criteria. If its "looks cool" or "thats my favorite color", good for them! This is all about throwing around ideas for them.

I was at WVHS today and they were polling the kids of their choices on colors and mascots
One color is going to be Gold
Black and gold ruled out as one school in Conf already has it. Red/Gold Purple/Gold White/Gold Silver/gold Teal/Gold
Mascots were Tigers/Lions and Mustangs.
Now this was only 1 advisory class, so I am sure there even more suggestions given.

Shouldn't they be polling the Frosh center, MS, and GS kids? How many kids from WVHS will go to MVHS?

Shouldn't they be polling the Frosh center, MS, and GS kids? How many kids from WVHS will go to MVHS? you know I thought the same thing - if you want to poll someone - start with the appropriate 7th graders today who are the first graduating class of Matea Valley - shouldn't they have a say ? btw, my vote (which counts for zip) is for Purple and Gold ( but being an NU alum makes me partial to the purple ) - and my 7th grade daugher who will be a part of that class also votes for purple/gold ( I've done a good job of brainwashing - LOL ) as for mascots the family is split between Mustangs and Thunderbirds - we like both - and both avoid any potential future PC nonsense.

More info on this (starting with older kids). Apparently it's the same process as was used for NVHS. They start getting suggestions from the older kids, whittle it down to the most commonly mentioned, and then the MS'ers actually decide. This way the older kids have a stake, and and mascots like "pink and brown" and "Sponge Bob Squarepants" tend to be avoided by the slightly older kids for the initial list.

In the PTA President's meeting this Howie last week, he stated that the colors that they prefer to see would be Black/Gold or Red or Maroon/Gold. He said the district would like to avoid Purple due to some gang problems that color represents.

He said the district would like to avoid Purple due to some gang problems that color represents. Wow. Northwestern grads really have a perception problem in this town.

Wow. Northwestern grads really have a perception problem in this town. Yeah, I've seen all those law graduates hanging out at the mall swinging their switchblades around - pretty scary I guess I'll have to check my 'affiliation' before I wear my colors on Saturday heading to the OSU game in Evanston. Having grown up on the south side of Chicago, I know you can run into any color being a possible gang affiliation - especially gold (yellow) and anything - so I would love to hear how the purple and gold got singled out, and Blue ( that I can name several gangs that use) did not ? Maybe I am just uninformed..so I'll see if anyone else knows. Here's a link to many Chi - gang colors - I'm guessing there is no combination not being used somewhere, but again someone here may have more local info than I have on purple and gold. www.chitown.com/bigshoulders/gngcolor.html

The SB is falling back into their old way of coming up with excuses for things they don't like.
Must let them know to stop it now!

I spoke with a colleague who knows a little bit about these aspects of Aurora. His first thought right away, when I was describing the colors issue was, gold and black and the Latin Kings. This is one of the bigger ones, as he tells me. (His info is a bit dated due to age, there may be newer ones.) We took a quick google look for Aurora PD info and found... From students.ed.uiuc.edu/catey/GangScene.htmlOne major gang identification clue is the colors, which they wear. However, a problem arises when using this method for identification. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to decipher which gang is at work because some of their identifying colors overlap with each other. Below is a chart, which shows the different colors that are worn by the different gangs in Aurora: Gang Name Identifying Colors* Latin Kings black/yellow Vice Lords red/black; yellow/black Latin Homeboys black/white Maniac Latin Disciples blue/black Ambrose baby blue/black Insane Deuces green/black Black Gangster Disciples blue/black (Aurora Police Department, 1994) *The Illinois State Police’s web site supplies updated versions of gang colors. I think our administration should be more specific about gang issues when the color decision gets closer. As of right now, the negative connotation for purple is not checking out for me.
