Another question...What was the real purpose here? Bring people together? Get over it? Let's all just get along?
If the purpose was any of the above it failed miserably and offended many. It's usually not a good idea to start out insulting people by mocking them and being condescending. Another thing, trying to shame those who already feel pursecuted certainly doesn't seem to be a good way to help "everybody get along".
Church is supposed to inspire. Does anyone feel inspired after listening to that "sermon" (and I use the term loosely)?

Hey! I live in TG and I send my daughter to Preschool at Wheatland (just realized this when I read Researching's Post).
I actually have not listened to the Podcast and do not plan to. However, I can not wait until next week's sermon on home theater rooms!

I wonder if they would do a mockery in a similar fashion if the topic was about children with Special Needs.

From reading other comments about this on another board, it almost sounds like there's a whole "hate on Naperville" (specifically S. Naperville) twist to it. Seriously... WTF? Do people realize how prejudice they sound? Oh, but wait, if it goes one way that's bad.. but the other direction, well that's good. I absolutely agree there is.......maybe it explains the we want our Neuqua thing ? Funny for years I listened to whining about how other areas were looked down upon by people from Naperville - specifically in our school district. I always felt bad about that perception - now it seems it's open season on Naperville - and we have a SB- and Super who basically only deal with one town. I hate the whole separatist stuff - but I am calling it as I see it right now. When I listen to a pastor talking about how he was told Naperville people won't go to a church with Bolingbrook people ( my Mom lives in Bolingbrook ) - I am highly insulted, that he thinks that little of us to repeat that kind of nonsense. What am I supposed to feel bad that I live here ? What bull. I look neither up nor down to people because of where they live - however that doesn't seem to be the case around here any more- led by our school leaders with the 'elitist' crapola at SB meetings.

Starting to get worried....first Ames and now Wheatland. Would have saved a lot of my time if Daeschner skipped the whole "elitist" speech and just told us in the first place that the Eola site was Holy land. In addition, why all of the misrepresentations about the Route 59th street bridge (goes against the whole "though shall not lie" thing). Would have been easier if the Board was just honest about the fact that they consider Tallgrass the modern day Sodom: "the Sodomites, overweeningly proud of their numbers and the extent of their wealth, showed themselves insolent to men and impious to the Divinity, insomuch that they no more remembered the benefits that they had received from him, hated foreigners and declined all intercourse with others. Indignant at this conduct, God accordingly resolved to chastise them for their arrogance..." Josephus, Antiquities I: 194-5 If I go to church this weekend and my Pastor is dressed in orange, I am done! you likely don't want to see the 'gifts' sent to all the local churches today - marked Enjoy, sincerely 204.

Problem is he misses the point - its not about boundaries - its about yanking freshman out of the school they started at, its about distance and ridiculous travel times, its about sit down and shut up. Spin away although its offensive the PR chief felt it was necessary to get the Church involved.
For those interested, the other titles in the sermon (wouldn't exactly call that a sermon) series Suburban Spirituality - The Ups and Downs of Pursuing the American Dream are:
Sept. 28 - Increased taxes in a down economy ? - The Promise and unintended Consequences of life in D204
Oct. 12 - The Ups and Downs of No Sports, No Auditorium, No Pool, No Music Wing and the construction perils of opening an incomplete school and using Invisible Barriers to "fence that baby off".
Oct. 19 - The Ups and Downs of fashion no-no's wearing orange after Halloween and how to snag an overpaid job in D204
Oct. 26 - The Ups and Downs of Being Bussed to Iowa to go to School
Nov. 2 - The Ups and Downs of being an Elitist

I pray this isn't even remotely tied to our PR machine - I don't like when religion is tied into local and national politics - I sure as heck don't expect it to be injected into school politics. There is a separation of church and state for a reason in this country... I'm perfectly capable of understanding what God's will is as it relates to my life and my family's life. And really, I am getting quite sick of the anti Naperville rhetoric - regardless of who wants to speak it. This is kind of stunning...really. Ditto! Ditto! Ditto! I had a chance to sleep on this and all I can say is "how offensive and obsurd!". Sadly, this changes my viewpoint on this church entirely. Now when my Methodist family members come in for the holidays I will have to find another church to recommend. This is not the Methodist church I remember. The church I remember certainly didn't ridicule and mock. This just represented this church as bullies. Hurtful to say this least and, by being presented in church, all under the umbrella of God! How disappointing! I guess you hear what you want to hear. the sermon was about putting aside your differences embracing diversity.

Has anyone contacted the church to let them know exactly how offensive this is? Also, I know many in TG who take their little ones to preschool there. I wonder how they feel about being a parody all the while they still write their checks and the church happily collects them? I heard alot of laughing in the background during the podcast.... maybe they knew it was a parity?

I've heard many sermons in my life on that subject - and none of them were as accusatory and painted people with as broad a brush as this did - even back in the 60's.

I wonder how they feel about being a parody all the while they still write their checks and the church happily collects them? Last night I did send an email to the church stating my disappointment with the sermon especially the beginning part with Starbucks. I went to say that I felt it continued to stereotype certain areas. The reply I got was an explanation of why it was done (very long) and that since the podcast doesn't show the video, alot is lost. After about 15 minutes of listening to the podcast (I did continue to listen) I thought it was more appropriate for a church and I really like the end where they announced the community service projects.
