As we near the end of this school year I notice that the reality of the change in schools is starting to really hit my Class of 2012 student hard. After attending athletic banquets that excitedly discuss "next year" and receiving their school athletic letters/numbers, the isolation of the affected Class of 2012 students takes hold. Instead of fully enjoying the fruits of their labors and looking ahead to propelling forward as sophomores on the accomplishments of their freshman year, these students are faced with the reality that they will only be sophomores in name, and NOT in reputation. They will be virtual freshmen at their new schools. That replaces my previous anger with sadness for the needless sacrifice these children are being FORCED to make.
The situation is especially grim for these students as some tryouts are already being held for the fall of 2009 at WV. That is what leads me to posting in this thread. I know how hard it is on my child to hear fellow NV freshmen talk about next year. I can't begin to imagine how this must be on the current WV Class of 2012 students being FORCED to move to MV. NV has not started holding tryouts or informational meetings for the 2009-2010 school year. WV has. How do the affected WV Class of 2012 students feel about this? To my knowledge, MV has not started having extracurricular informational meetings. To me that means that if you are an active, involved WV student being FORCIBLY moved to MV, you would feel enormous isolation and concern over the fact that your fellow WV students are looking toward the future. A future you will not be fully a part of.
This situation is completely unfair to these kids. On top of that, it seems that some are completely insensitive to the needs of these students. Would it be so difficult to wait to hold these tryouts/meetings? What if MV doesn't open on time? That means that any student being forced to change schools will have missed out on the opportunity of being involved in these activities. Would a second tryout be held?
You're absolutely right, researching. I appreciate your heartfelt comments. Unfortunately, like you I have a child from 2012 caught up in the mess. It's not fair and something really should be done.
I know it will never happen now but the SB/Admin should really have explored opening MV with freshmen only. No kid should be forced to move schools. To those of you that say well that's how NV was done, well I'd say well couldn't we learn something from that? It's not right PERIOD.
I've said it a million times but the class of 2012 is getting screwed. They are not getting a fair HS experience - none of them. The freshmen kids that stay at NV will be losing many of their friends as some are forced to move to WV. The kids that stay at WV lose many of their friends that move to MV. The kids that are expected to move to WV are getting screwed as they lose many of their friends from NV and their connection to their existing school whether it be sports, music, theater, academics, clubs, etc. Finally, the kids that are expected to move to MV from WV are getting the biggest screw. They go to a completely unfinished HS without the same opportunities and they lose many of their existing friends from WV. How is this fair?
casey..I am not saying kids are resilient or any of those things aforementioned in prior posts, but I will say this.
The parents attitudes to the move will play a huge part in how their child handles the move. A kid that hears they are being screwed every which way are going to be affected negatively vs. one that hears positive things from their parents IMO. yes the kids have a mind of their own, but the parents can have a big impact either way.
