Man. I can see my kids getting the crud beat out of them for going to 'Aptakisic'. Pot high is not sounding so bad ;-) I think " Willard Scott High School" is still available though Which one, the weatherman, the first Ronald McDonald or the early Naperville settler aka White Eagle?? Obviously, tired minds think alike.

Since people got to Googling, it seems appropriate to consider the following regarding local history, some of which seems to have repeated itself throughout this referendum process:
The account of Jean Claude Allouez in the Jesuit Relation of 1666-67 says of the Potawatomi:
"Their country lies along the Lake of the Illimouek--a large Lake which had not before come to our knowledge, adjoining the Lake of the Hurons, and that of the Stinkards, in a Southeasterly direction. These people are warlike and they engage in Hunting and Fishing. Their country is excellently adapted to raising Indian corn, and they have Fields covered with it, to which they are glad to have recourse, to avoid the famine that is only too common in these regions"
Consider the parallels -- clearly a lot of corn has been grown (and continues to grow) on the very land on which our 3rd HS will be built. No question that the public comment period demonstrated the population to be "warlike," and the message boards and websites were nothing if not "hunting and fishing" of one kind or another. Relative to WV, the new HS would be in a southeasterly direction.
All of these factors point to us embracing our history and naming it Potawatomi High -- Go you Stinkards, Go!!!!!
And pass the Peace Pipe while you're at it!!

Not that Willard Scott..... the one associated with the Pottowatamie negotiations I assume -- although everyone would assume the weatherman . ( trivia point- WS was once Ronald McDonald) -
Aptaksic will get one throttled, I agree--- also have to be careful on mascot...my high school we were the OWLS....not if that doesn't strike fear into your opponents --LOL !
Doc- Did you go to Gage Park? Good heavens!

I still like the idea of naming the school for an outstanding individual who was known for his or her great character and changed the world for the better. I like the idea of naming the high school Ronald Reagan High School and naming the middle school Paul Simon Middle School. I think we need to keep with the Native American tradition for the high school. I like the symetry.

Realistically speaking, does anyone know the names of Chief Waubonsie's other sons? Nequa is the only one who seems to have gotten any press, as he later became chief himself. Waubonsie and Neuqua were from the Potawatomi tribe, which means "keeper of the flame / fire" So, Orange would be an appropriate color. The bigger question you'd need to ask yourself is if you want to send your kid to "Pot High", where the symbol is a flame ;D Ronald Reagan High? Would LOVE it. Prairie Commons works too, although I've got a bad feeling our mascot would be a prairie dog..... I think the colors should be Orange, since we used it for the boundary maps, and Blue, since the two go well together. What About Illini High - nice ring to it! Easy to cheer as well. DrWho is totally off his time-travelling rocker for his silly suggestion of purple. If it weren't for the fact he is Guiness drinker, I'd taunt him a second time.

Sorry jb, Navy and orange is NNHS colors. Purple is the color of royalty! Yeah, it's also the color of Barney the Dinosaur. ;D Go Illini ! A little more diggin' and I came up with several Potty leaders..... Ashkum - supposedly the jokster of the tirbe??? Metea(pronounced Metawa) advocated educating Indian children...hmmmm Shabonna, already mentioned and last but not least Pekineni -which supposedly translates to Fox....wouldn't that be nice, get it ...Fox Valley??? Too bad it's such an ugly word! Nice research! Can't say any roll right off the tongue, but I can imagine folks were having the same conversation when "Waubonsie" and "Neuqua" were proposed. I like Metea, great symbolism.
