This was the last IPPC meeting for the school year.
Dr. D. gave his year end wrap up of things that are on the agenda. This lengthy list includes what was done 07-08, which are the "design" items, and what will be done in 08-09, which are the implementation items. Design items include (and I will be attaching a list of these items when it is sent to IPPC Reps): Design MV, Mediation, Middle School, All Day K, Technology, design site based targets/accountability, spec. ed. pilots, design systems regarding instructional leadership, design professional development, pedagogy - instructional strategies, middle school schedule, teacher evaluation model, breakfast program (we currently provide 400 students with breakfast), e-tutorials and stepping up advanced placement classes. This is the "design" list. Most of the implementation list involves implementing the design list. One other item they will be looking at for 08-09 is elementary foreign language - probably Spanish. Dr. D. favors a total language immersion model.
Asked how many schools would be losing art and music rooms because of ADK and the answer was I don't know, possibly one and thought maybe that one might be resolved.
Currently 87 kids are signed up for half day, which translates into 4 classrooms. That is considered a moving target because based on site locations some might opt for ADK if they don't like the site option.
The district is looking at alternatives to Sodexo. The contract is expiring. Did not ask which year, this or next.
The interventionists who are now present in the ES are there to instruct students and work with teachers and build on their repetoire to help all kids. Each school has its own data.
Regarding Spec. Ed. pilots - this will be discussed more at the Tues. 5/20 SNPTA meeting, but the statement was made that each pilot school is responsible for getting information out to the parents at the schools.
The question was asked as to whether other schools were changing their spec. ed. delivery as well. The answer was some other schools may be looking at it and that we are trying to accelerate the achievement of our special ed kids everywhere.
Dave Zolner, the new technology guy spoke for about 1/2 hour. MIS and IT have merged. They are creating leadership areas so that they can do more than just react. Long range plans are being made in regard to budget and tech plans. They are looking at a five year cycle. They are partnering with curricular areas. Beyond that they are looking at e school and technical curricular changes. They have consolidated the printer toner contract for all schools into one contract which also includes service and cleaning. The district has 3000 printers and this is saving the district money (didn't say how much).
A goal is to have digital projectors in each classroom as a key to connecting with students.
Working on a fiber network to connect all schools to be completed by the middle to end of next year. This opens up remote access for staff, parents and students.
This is important - THEY ARE LOOKING TO FORM A TECH ADVISORY COMMITTEE WITH PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY. I would suggest if you are interested to contact him.
Pinnacle online grading system will be replaced after next year.
The question was asked where the money was coming from for this. The answer was he didn't know (actually he said they were going to have a bake sale - great sense of humor). He was not sure where the money was coming from.
June 9th - target date for new email system for the district.
OK, those are my notes.
The rest of the meeting was IPPC business, awards, elections, etc. I had to leave at 11 so missed most of that.
More from the Dr. D. notes (I don't know how these ended up down here, but here they are.
Someone asked "what if" MV does not open in 2009. The answer was it will open in August of 2009. The question was asked again (and again) and the answer was that if that happened we will operate the way we are now. The next comment was Metea will open as a full-service, freshman and sophomore school with athletics.

It will open in the Fall of 2009 because if the rumors are true, Dr. D gets a bonus. The only thing I thank God for in all of this is that my kids will not be going to this school in August of 2009 (they will probably have to wear hard hats and OSHA ear plugs, and have classes cancelled when it rains). Let's just hope therewillnot be any reason to have large equipment crossing the pipelines once students start attending class.

thank you for the update snm
I am in favor of foreign language in ES. I believe D203 is going with full immersion (last I heard). That seems like a fast roll out - starting next fall? That is a lot of change for one year.

That is a lot of change for one year. Too much change at once makes managing the fallout and monitoring what to tweak very difficult. I hope they can keep all of the plates spinning.

There is one thing that I evidently didn't get correctly. I was told that Dr. D. said that there were 80 signed up for half day K and that the site would be Clow. Sorry for the confusion.

Foreign language is being looked at. I did not get the impression from what he said that it would begin this fall. I agree that foreign language in ES is wonderful. IMO what they do in MS in this district is worthless.

I agree with Arch that this is a very aggressive agenda. I think that's the way Dr. D. likes to operate.

Sashimi, as a parent of children who will attend MV, I object to this portrayal of their school. Regardless of whether you like the location or the process by which the district got to this location, this is an ugly comment with no basis in fact. They've barely begun grading the site, but MV is already a substandard building??

Hence, the need for ear plugs and hard hats.

Do you know the definitive age of crossover of when one sounds like a native versus learning/knowing the language? Much obliged.

Do you know the definitive age of crossover of when one sounds like a native versus learning/knowing the language? I always thought this age range was before K. Age range is between 6 and 10. Language, however, is understood better at an older age.
