Yes, but who selects who can compete ? If you read the wording on being state caliber - who decides that ? tricky business IMHO. Also I did talk to KB about this( and yes I know she is a sports supporter and a former WV VB coach) - and practice time etc for swimmers will be very tricky. The majority of athletes are team sports - just by definition. This is not a negative about her, I have all the respect in the world for her. What happens to the team player who makes varsity as a freshman at WV and then moves to MV ? And yes, there will be some, and even more who would have made varsity as a sophomore..why take that opportunity away from them? I understand about DECA, my oldest had a DECA state win....but I know she wouldn't trade it for the 4 varsity letters. It's almost too bad that you can't just have a WV north and WV south campus. Then you could move everyone over to the MV site at once and alleviate crowding. They would still be warriors, just in a different building. Keep the same song and colors. In 1977, West Aurora opened a north campus. It was still West Aurora but the two buildings were separate in that they did not combine class sizes into one big mega class. They were always separate but they shared the colors, songs etc. All of the north and south students competed for the sports positions though, as we only had one team so that would be bad here in Naperville. Don't know if the sports people would let you have a WV-north and WV-south team. yeah, I see where you're headed with that and you're right wouldn't really work here due to the sheer size. Also MV needs to be it's own school with it's own traditions, I fully support that. I just don't believe the kids who open it should have to wait. I understand there's other sides to the coin, this is just my opinion as someone who's been involved with kids in competitive sports for the last - well more years than I want to count.

This will truly suck if you are a star football player. I wonder what happened at NV? Isn't that the time OJ Babatude was there - I thought he was in the first graduating class?

Neuqua opened in 1997 so first grad class was June 2000. OJ Babatunde would have been the class of '02, so he was 2 classes later. Those ahead of him there faced what the MV students will. I agree it is especially hard on football players as their college scholarships owe a lot to their high school careers. In sports like volleyball and soccer, almost 100% of scholarships are attained through club ball..in large cities like the Chicago area. ( not saying hs sports doesn't count, but is overshadowed skill wise, and in many schools the majoroty of varsity players are club players ). Basketball also draws heavily from AAU teams although still awarding grants based on HS play.

IMHO I wonder if for the 1st year, if there are any Varsity caliber players that will attend MVHS, if they could be given the chance to play varsity at one of the 2 schools already. They could adjust their schedules so the have Study hall the last period to give them the opportunity to get to the other school. I would even go as far as the SD should provide that transport.

It's what I believe to be a fair solution also ( or else it is not an equal experience across the schools) - as individual sports participants at least have the opportunity if selected to participate. My guess is there absolutely will be varsity level players going to MV - a quick scan of rosters of the sports now at WV and NV would tell us that. I know I did this when VB and soccer (girls) were in season and if I recall about 40% of the soccer roster was Fr & So ( including their 3 top scorers) --and for VB it was less but still included IIRC 3 players. I'll see if I can check that and these were for WV, I didn't check NV. btw - the same should hold true for someone in an activity in the arts that does not have the same activity offered when MV opens.

I would fully agree with this, but apparently this is not allowed by IHSA (unless I misunderstood what I heard about it). These kids who would play on varsity will just have to be superstars on their 9th and 10th grade teams and then lead the new MV varsity teams as juniors and seniors. The district has already said they will not do the one thing that would work best - allow those kids to finish out at WV. However, it seems that having some of these talented players at MV will help build the sports program from the start.

However, it seems that having some of these talented players at MV will help build the sports program from the start. And yet why not consider it ( letting them stay) as a show of concern for those kids -- I view it as 2 issues, 1/ those who will change schools and coaches, but at least have a chance to play on a varsity team ( kids moving fromNV to WV ) - and 2/ those who will move from WV and NOT be able to play on a varsity team period. some of these kids are going to be the same ones that just bought double time commutes to school - again I understand taking one for the team, but the same kids are being asked to take more than 1. has been my issue from day 1: - double commute - bus time -- change high schools and all that goes with that --- no varsity sports until junior year ---- for those with the long commute - also parents more limited in involvement due timing of activities - new longer commute in rush hour that's a lot to ask the same kids to take....IMHO.... I understand it's how it was done before...but does that make it right ? btw - no one who moved to NV last time got a longer commute than they already had- let alone twice the time. They got the school closest to them, so 2 of the above 4 issues were not in play. it's not one issue that's the deal breaker - it's the cumulative effect

I don't have anything at stake here so i am just calling it as I see it.
If the school opens in 2009 there will be no varsity athletics for freshman and sophmores. That is true.
In 2010 there will be no seniors so freshmen and sophmores will have a better chance to make varsity teams and juniors will have a better oppotunity to play.
In 2009 and 2010 WV fresman will have a very difficult time making varsity sports because they will cometing against a larger amount of upperclassmen.
NV freshmen will always have a harder time making varsity teams because NV will remain a larger school and varsity slots will remain more competative.
Don't these facts even things out somewhat?

Freshman always have a difficult time making varsity - not so much sophomores even at NV - the kids that are that skilled will make it at any school. So for the more marginal athlete that maybe makes a team the 2nd year MV opens, yes it may be an advantage - to those who would have been playing varsity ball for 2 years already - no it is a disadvantage. My main concern goes for those who make a varsity team freshman year, then have to sit as a sophomore. So I guess they even out if you consider all the kids as one whole- to the individual kid who doesn't get the same opportunity as others in the district, that would be a harder sell on equalling out.

In my experience, there has not been a freshman on varsity for football at NV. A few sophomores moved up, very few, only if they would play; if there was a space on the team. Coach Wells believes (correctly, IMO) that playing time/experience is most important. He would never move a player up to sit the bench, unless it was post-season play. For that reason, most sophs play JV(soph). At least they get to play on Friday nights before V!

Couple the fact that boys mature later, andthe size - speed of the game today and I think you'd be right. I amtalking about - soccer - volleyball - basketball -- all sports where skill is just as important as size. Soccer is dominated by underclassmen due to the fact many do notplay high school past their sophomore or junior year due to club commitments
